Jasprit Bumrah brutally attacks third umpire and broadcaster after DRS wobbles

Jasprit Bumrah has shown clear dissatisfaction over the DRS call against John Campbell on the fourth day of the ongoing second and final Test between India and West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

It was a moment full of drama and tension when Jasprit Bumrah almost dismissed John Campbell in thrilling fashion. He bowled a fast ball which went back to the left-handed batsman and remained well down. Campbell, attempting to play a drive, strayed away and missed the ball hitting his pads.

Jasprit Bumrah disappointed with John Campbell’s close contest in Delhi Test

Bumrah and his teammates made a strong appeal for LBW, surely they have got a big wicket. But on-field umpire Richard Illingworth rejected the appeal. The Indian players looked shocked and immediately decided to take a review for LBW.

When third umpire Alex Wharfe started checking the replays, the ball was clearly visible hitting Campbell’s pads and was very close to hitting the stumps. Then as the ball passed both bat and pad, the UltraEdge showed a small spike.

This meant that Campbell would have got a short inside edge before the ball hit his pads. After a lengthy investigation, Alex Wharfe confirmed that there was indeed an inside edge and asked the on-field umpire to stick to his original “not out” decision, leaving the Indian camp disappointed.

After the third umpire’s decision, Bumrah expressed his disappointment, questioning the accuracy of the technique. “You know this too. It’s out there, but technology can’t prove it,” the Indian bowler was heard saying. Even a commentator agreed with Bumrah.

“And I think just being Bumrah on the stump mic, he said exactly what many people watching at home would have said,” he said.

John Campbell breaks record with first Test century

Meanwhile, John Campbell made the most of the call as the West Indies opener scored a maiden Test century. He completed his maiden Test century by hitting a six off Ravindra Jadeja at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, sending the ball into the stands over wide long-on.

The West Indies batsman took off his helmet and celebrated with thunderous applause from the dressing room. It was a hard-fought century. It took him 48 innings to score his first Test century as an opening batsman. He created history for the West Indies as he ended the team’s long drought as an opening batsman.

Campbell has become the first West Indies opening batsman to reach three figures in a Test since March 2023, breaking a nearly two-decade-long wait against India. Before Campbell, the last West Indies batsman to score a century against India was Darren Ganga, who scored 135 at Basseterre in 2006.

Campbell’s Test century in India is the first since West Indies opener Wavell Hinds achieved the feat at Eden Gardens in 2002. He also became the fifth West Indies batsman to complete his maiden Test century with a six.

Campbell became the first West Indies opening batsman since Chris Gayle’s 150 against New Zealand in July 2012, other than Kraigg Brathwaite, to score a Test century against a team other than Bangladesh or Zimbabwe.
