The incident occurred after the Shubman Gill-led side suffered a humiliating defeat on the third day of the match (Sunday, November).
In South Africa’s second innings, Bavuma scored unbeaten 55 runs, while Corbin Bosch scored 25 runs and the visiting team reached 153 runs. South Africa registered a dramatic 30-run win after left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj took two wickets. The final dismissal came when Mohammed Siraj bowled a turning delivery to slip, where Aiden Markram completed a low catch.
As soon as the catch was made, players ran from all corners. South Africa achieved their first Test win in India in 15 years and took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Temba Bavuma continued his excellent record as captain with 10 wins in 11 Test matches.
Meanwhile, India had lost nine wickets and one batsman was unable to bat due to injury, leaving the chase incomplete. This collapse marked a rare series of four consecutive home defeats in this format.
After the final wicket, players from both the teams shook hands with each other and Jasprit Bumrah shared a warm moment with Bavuma. The incident drew attention following Jasprit Bumrah’s previous ‘dwarf’ comment about the South African captain.

Proteas break silence on Jasprit Bumrah’s ‘dwarf’ comment about Temba Bavuma
During South Africa’s first innings, an LBW appeal and a moment on the field attracted attention. In the 13th over, when Temba Bavuma was on strike, Jasprit Bumrah questioned whether the decision should be reviewed and was heard commenting on the stump mic about the batsman’s height.
At stumps on the first day, South Africa’s batting coach Ashwell Prince addressed the incident. He downplayed the matter, saying that it was the first time he had heard about it and also said that the team saw no need for further discussion.
Ashwell Prince said, “No, there will be no discussion. This is the first time, obviously, it has come to my attention. I don’t think there will be any problem because of what happened in between.”
Simon Harmer played a key role in South Africa’s victory in the Kolkata Test.
Simon Harmer, who has played only a few Tests since his debut ten years ago, produced a remarkable all-round bowling performance. He took four wickets in each innings with figures of 4/30 and 4/21. His spell helped South Africa bowl out India for 189 and later for 93.
Washington Sundar scored 31 runs in 92 balls, while Ravindra Jadeja scored 18 runs. Aiden Markram broke Sundar’s long innings and dismissed him with part-time off spin.
Axar Patel decided to strike back and pulled India closer to the target. Keshav Maharaj ended the match by taking two wickets in two balls. He ensured South Africa’s victory by taking the wickets of Akshar and Mohammed Siraj.
