Jammu and Kashmir’s first international cricketer Parvez Rasool announces retirement

Parvez Rasool has retired from all forms of cricket. This veteran player of Jammu and Kashmir informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his decision on Saturday (October 19).

He will always be remembered for being a trendsetter in Jammu and Kashmir cricket. In 2014, he created history by becoming the first player from his state to represent India in international cricket.

Parvez Rasool made his international debut during Mirpur ODI

Parvez Rasool made his international debut in 2014 during the Mirpur ODI against Bangladesh. Three years later in 2017, he also represented India in a T20I against England. The spin-bowling all-rounder also became the first Jammu and Kashmir cricketer to play in the Indian Premier League, before turning international cricket. He made his IPL debut for Pune Warriors India in 2013, before representing Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“When we started playing, not many people took Jammu and Kashmir cricket seriously. But we beat some big teams and also did well in the Ranji Trophy and other BCCI-recognised tournaments. I have led the team for a long time and it gives me great satisfaction to contribute a little to the team’s success story,” Rasool told Sportstar.

Whenever I represented my team, my goal was to ensure that we emerged winners – Parvez Rasool

“Whenever I represented my team, my aim was to ensure that we emerged victorious. Of course, at times the results did not go our way, but I tried my best to perform to the best of my abilities for Jammu and Kashmir,” Rasool said.

He said, “Now that I have some free time, I have been looking at the statistics and they are not bad at all. I have given many players off-match in the IPL and their performances have also been special…”

With his playing career over, Rasool is now keen to make an impact as a coach. He has recently passed the Level-II Coaching Certificate from the BCCI Center of Excellence and is keen to become a full-time coach.
