Australian debutant Jake Weatherald announced his arrival on the international scene with a celebration that instantly caught attention on the second day of the first Test of the ongoing Ashes 2025-26 series against England at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

After waiting for 10 nerve-wracking balls to get his first Test breakthrough, Jake Weatherald had to wait for 10 nerve-wracking balls before scoring his first Test run and when he came, he celebrated wildly, which reminded fans of Virat Kohli’s celebration.

As soon as the Tasmanian batsman reached the other end, he released all the pressure stored inside him. The left-handed batsman celebrated with a big fist bump and a smile, which instantly reminded fans of Virat Kohli’s celebration in Sydney.

Last month, Kohli had made headlines for a similar moment in Sydney when he celebrated his first run by raising his fist and smiling after two zeros during the third and final ODI against Australia. His celebration came after taking a single off Mitchell Starc at the SCG. In that match, the former Indian captain had scored a match-winning half-century against Australia.

Jake Weatherald was out on a short ball for 23 runs in Perth.

However, Jake Weatherald fell to another short-length ball that slipped towards him from around the wicket. The debutant tried to play a shot towards the leg side, but the ball came a little faster and closer to his body than he expected.

Without enough room to swing properly, Weatherold’s bat rotated slightly, and instead of the ball going where it wanted to go, it bounced off the front of the bat. The ball went straight into the air and Ben Duckett ran through cover to take an easy catch.

Brydon Carse got the first wicket for England as the Australian opener was out for 23 off 34 balls with three fours after a solid start at the Optus Stadium. Weatherald was dismissed by Jofra Archer for a duck in the first innings of the ongoing first Ashes Test.

Travis Head hits second fastest century in Ashes, Australia close to victory in Perth

Meanwhile, Travis Head has already completed his century, and he is well supported from the other end by another experienced campaigner, Marnus Labuschagne (30), as Australia now need only 46 runs to win the first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series in Perth.

Head scored 100 runs in just 69 balls in the first Ashes Test. This was the second fastest century in Ashes history and he became the joint-fastest opening batsman to reach three figures in all Test matches. Notably, Head also became the fastest player to score a century while chasing in the fourth innings in Test cricket.
