Team India’s fielding coach T Dilip has revealed the name of ‘Jonty Rhodes’ of the current team after winning the T20 World Cup 2026 title in Ahmedabad. The veteran coach praised star all-rounder Axar Patel for pulling off an impossible catch during the crucial semi-final clash against a dangerous England team.
The Men in Blue defeated New Zealand by 96 runs on Sunday, March 8. Sanju Samson (89 runs) scored his third consecutive half-century. He scored 97 runs against West Indies and 89 runs against England. Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shivam Dubey helped India post a huge score of 255 runs.
Indian fielding coach T Dilip reveals Team India’s ‘Jonty Rhodes’
T Dilip has seen the team win the Champions Trophy as well as the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups. Recently, during an interview with NDTV, he expressed satisfaction after seeing the brilliant catch. He praised head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav for their leadership.
“It all depends on the context. Axar’s effort in the semi-final was the best. It is great to see the team perform brilliantly in difficult moments. The T20 World Cup win was like a family function,” T Dilip told NDTV.
“Full credit to Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav for how they take care of all the members of the team. It is good leadership from both of them. Thanks to BCCI, Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir for trusting me. We will see more aggressive fielding in the coming days.”
Despite the victory of T20 World Cup 2026, there are concerns about Team India’s fielding.
The Indian team dropped 15 catches in the recent tournament, the most by any participating nation. Their overall catching efficiency was the worst with only 72 per cent, placing them below even Pakistan, who recorded 83 per cent.
During the final against New Zealand, Shivam Dubey dropped a sitter off Finn Allen. However, it didn’t stop there, as India incredibly missed two more easy chances that night. Another major tournament where India’s fielding completely crumbled under pressure was the 2025 Asia Cup.
India won the tournament, but dropping catches is a matter of concern for the team, because sometimes dropping catches can ruin matches and tournaments.
BCCI should review fielding coaching standards
During the Asia Cup 2025, the team dropped nine catches alone in the crucial Super 4 stage. T Dilip was fired but reinstated before that tournament.
He initially joined the national team setup under former head coach Rahul Dravid in November 2021, but the overall fielding standards haven’t really improved.
Players may practice making hundreds of catches during training, but those efforts rarely translate into consistent results on the field.
Senior members reportedly wanted to include him, which led to a contract extension to 2025. Coaches cannot enter the playing field to catch balls, but the BCCI should carefully review these drop-catch numbers soon.
