Ravindra Jadeja finally gave India the much-awaited breakthrough by dismissing West Indies opener John Campbell; However, what shocked the Indian players was that umpire Paul Reiffel stayed for too long and was almost forced to raise his fingers in front of the desperate appeals of the Indian players.
Although the Indians dominated the West Indies throughout the series, this was the first time that the West Indies batting pair seemed to overpower the Indian bowlers.
After the Indians gave up the follow-on, Windies batsmen John Campbell and Shai Hope put together a big partnership to take the Windies to a respectable score on the third day and continued this for almost an hour of the morning session on the fourth day.
Indian players surprised by umpire Paul Riffel’s delay in declaring John Campbell out
Veteran spinner Ravindra Jadeja finally drew first blood of the morning for India after scoring his maiden Test century in Delhi, following a mammoth 150+ run partnership between the two West Indies batsmen and John Campbell.
The spinner, who opened the proceedings with Jasprit Bumrah, bowled a flat-arm ball to Campbell which pitched onto the middle stump and hit the batsman’s front pad plumb in front of the wickets as he attempted a reverse sweep. After being saved by DRS earlier on the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah, no one could change his luck this time.
The centurion departed, but not before, in a bizarre feat, umpire Paul Reiffel thought long and hard about an dismissal that seemed utterly foolish. He was almost forced to leave by Jadeja and the Indian players with a desperate appeal which led to him raising his fingers.
