For Ishan Kishan, the T20 World Cup 2026 title is not just a title but also a personal testimony. After years of hard work, the keeper-batsman finally got success. Ishan looked emotional as he joined the media session with Abhishek Sharma after India won the final by 96 runs against New Zealand.
Ishan Kishan’s entry in the T20 World Cup 2026 was a surprising decision taken by the team selectors. After being left out of BCCI’s central contract, this Jharkhand-born player knocked on the doors of selectors and played match-winning innings one after another in domestic cricket.
Ishan Kishan took Jharkhand to the top
At one point of time, the batsman’s international career was surrounded by uncertainty. Battling injuries, mental health and personal issues, Ishan Kishan remained behind the scenes until his unforgettable stint with the Jharkhand cricket team.
As captain, he led Jharkhand to its first-ever Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) title in December 2025, defeating Haryana by 69 runs in the final. As captain, he was the tournament’s top scorer with 517 runs, including an innings of 101 in the final.
Selection for T20 World Cup 2026 team was not easy for him
After the historic achievement, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel had to call him for the T20 World Cup 2026. Ishan Kishan prepared himself for this moment – the moment with the T20 World Cup trophy, which he lifted in Ahmedabad on March 8.
Kishan said, “When Suryakumar called me a few months ago to tell me about my selection in the World Cup squad, he asked me, ‘Can you win the World Cup for me?’. “I just asked him, ‘Will you trust me?’ And he said, ‘Yes, I will trust you’,” Ishaan told the media.
He said, “It means a lot to me. More than me, my family members are more relaxed now. As players, we can take care of ourselves during our difficult times, but it is our family members who remain worried.”
The pain hidden inside him for years came out of his throat, when he said to Abhishek Sharma sitting right next to him, “Your suffering is of one month, whereas I worked hard for 2 years.”
Generally a question is asked on struggle in life.
Abhishek – I answer, I have more now.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma recorded three consecutive ducks in the group stage of the tournament, before making a strong comeback in the final. Like Ishaan, Sharma also scored a half-century on Sunday.
A day before the final, Ishaan got the news of his cousin sister’s death in a car accident. It was a disastrous situation. But he needed to prepare himself for this fierce competition. The half-century he scored in the final is dedicated to him.
“I wasn’t planning on saying this, but I lost my cousin in a car accident yesterday. I found out during the practice session. She always wanted me to score big runs. But today was a big day, instead of containing my emotions I just thought, ‘The best thing I can do is score runs for her’, and that’s why I looked up after scoring my half-century. It’s for my sister, her family and my very close friends. Was”, Ishan Kishan told.
Hardik Pandya helped stabilize his mindset
Hardik Pandya’s words of wisdom helped Ishaan remember his thoughts. Hardik encouraged him to play for the team because cricket is all about supporting each other.
“Before the final I was not feeling good mentally, but I spoke to Hardik bhai. He said it would not be easy, but he reminded me that it is a team game so we need to lift each other up for the interest of the team. I had that anger in me to perform in the final”, Ishan Kishan described the challenging phases he went through ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 final.
