Ishan Kishan made a big revelation before the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, saying that he always wanted to open for India. The explosive left-handed batsman was asked to open the innings with Abhishek Sharma in the practice match against South Africa, where he played a explosive innings of 53 runs in just 20 balls.
India played its only warm-up match before the ICC T20 World Cup against South Africa. The match followed an intense 5-match series against New Zealand, which saw the return of opening batsman Ishan Kishan to the Indian team. However, initially, Sanju Samson was not handed the opening role to give him adequate chances throughout the series.
However, playing all 5 games, Samson failed in all the games and could score just 52 runs at an average of 10.40. Since the batsman failed to score runs, Ishan Kishan was the most likely contender to replace him. Kishan batted brilliantly in his comeback series and was the second highest scorer in the series with one half-century and one century.
Ishan Kishan started the innings for India.
Ishan Kishan once again stole the show when he was given the chance to open the innings against South Africa in the practice match. He scored 53 runs in just 20 balls in the match and Kishan scored 265 runs with the help of two fours and seven sixes.
Kishan said after talking about the match, “I was really excited for Wednesday. I wanted to open the innings. Batting at number three, I enjoyed that position, but with the World Cup coming, no matter what position I bat in, my focus is always on giving my best for the team.”
Revealing his batting strategy, Ishan Kishan said, “I think it’s about being in the present, seeing the ball and playing the shots that are required at that moment. I am not putting too much thought or effort into it. I am just reacting, seeing the ball and playing accordingly and it is working well for me.”
Ishan Kishan expressed the importance of Tilak Verma in the Indian T20 team.
Ishan Kishan praised the opportunity he got at the Dr DY Patil Stadium and claimed that some days feel really good. He credited the Navi Mumbai pitch for being such a reliable wicket to bat on.
After this he talked about the intention and said that there should be a mentality to take the ball across the boundary line, even if the fielder is placed in the deep. After this he mentioned the importance of batsman Tilak Verma.
“He is very important for us. He is no longer just a batsman; He gives us some overs, especially when two left-handed batsmen are batting. He is a very good fielder and the way he is batting these days, you need someone at number three who can rotate the strike and keep things going,” he said while talking about Tilak Verma.
Kishan praised the great effort of Indian bowlers
Ishan Kishan pointed out that the pitch was a really good surface to bat on and hence, it was difficult for the Indian bowlers to defend the total on that ground. However, Kishan praised the Indian bowlers for their excellent conduct in the practice match in Navi Mumbai.
He further added, “There is always room for improvement. We will talk about areas where we can bowl to the batsmen and how we can plan better. But on this wicket, I think we have done a pretty good job. It was not easy and we did not give away many sixes. Overall, it was a solid bowling effort, although we will sit and discuss how else we can improve.”
India used every bowler in the deck, even with the likes of Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Verma bowling a few overs between them. India used all their bowlers except Jasprit Bumrah, who did not bowl a single ball in the practice game.
