The debate over teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has intensified after the 15-year-old was once again denied a debut in India during the ongoing England tour. Many expected Beam to get his first cap after earning the senior call-up following a sensational IPL 2026 campaign, but the team management has continued to support its established players.
The decision has drawn criticism from many quarters, with head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer facing questions as to why one of the most exciting young talents in world cricket is still waiting for his chance. However, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has now broken his silence on the matter and defended the decision taken by the Indian team management.
Notably, Vaibhav Suryavanshi looked unhappy at Manchester Nets recently as Gautam Gambhir faced the heat.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi got a call from India on the basis of his bravery in IPL.
The left-handed batsman’s selection was not surprising given the exceptional form he has shown over the last 18 months.
The left-handed opening batsman enjoyed a historic IPL 2026 season for Rajasthan Royals, and finished as the leading run-scorer in the tournament. He scored 776 runs in 16 innings at an average of 48.50 and a tremendous strike rate of 237.30, which included one century and five half-centuries. He also broke Chris Gayle’s long-standing record of most sixes in an IPL season by hitting 72 sixes.
His overall IPL numbers are equally impressive. Suryavanshi has scored 1,028 runs in 23 matches at an average of 44.69 and a strike rate of 228.95, which includes two centuries and six fifties.
This young player also maintained his form in India A cricket before the senior tour. His recent scores include 94 against Sri Lanka A, 44 against Afghanistan A, 38 against Afghanistan A and 21 against Sri Lanka A. Those performances further strengthened the argument that he was ready for international cricket.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi has refused to make India’s debut on UK tour
Despite his excellent form, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is still waiting for his first India cap. Kishore was sidelined for both matches of India’s T20I series against Ireland, which the Men in Blue lost.
When India toured England many expected him to finally make his debut, but the management once again retained the experienced opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma.
As a result, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has now also missed the first T20 match against England, prolonging the wait for his much-awaited international debut.
The repeated misses have led to widespread discussion among fans and experts, with many questioning whether the youngster deserves a long-term opportunity despite consistently producing runs.
BCCI explains the reason behind the delay in Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s India debut
Speaking on the controversy, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla defended the Indian team management and urged people to trust the decisions of the captain and coach.
“We also believe that he is a very talented player and he demonstrated it during the IPL. I have seen many comments against the team management and coaches, but I want to make it clear that the coach and the captain will take the final decision. They are looking at the situation and whenever the right opportunity comes, they will definitely give him a chance,” Shukla told Times Now.
Rajeev Shukla further said that such matters should be left completely to the team management instead of becoming the subject of unnecessary criticism.
“Therefore, such decisions should be left to the discretion of the team management. I don’t know why such unnecessary comments are being made in this regard,” he said.
The comments effectively backed Gambhir and Iyer, both of whom have faced scrutiny for not including Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the playing eleven despite the publicity surrounding the young player.
Did you understand BCCI’s explanation for depriving Vaibhav Suryavanshi of his India debut?
The answer is largely yes. While Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s figures certainly justify a debut, India’s current T20I setup already has several proven performers at the top of the order.
Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have played major roles in India’s recent success and have consistently performed well at the international level. It would have been difficult to justify dropping him immediately after a few games.
The middle order also seems to be in order, leaving very little space for the young players. India have often preferred to give more chances to players who have already proven themselves in international cricket rather than making frequent changes based solely on domestic or IPL performance.
Moreover, Suryavanshi is only 15 years old. Unlike many players who are fighting against time, he has his entire career ahead of him. The selectors and team management will simply be ensuring that his entry into international cricket comes at the right time rather than rushing the process.
Considering the depth of India’s squad, the form of the current players and the teenage age, Rajeev Shukla’s explanation seems reasonable. Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s debut may have been delayed, but all signs suggest that it is only a matter of time before one of Indian cricket’s brightest young stars finally gets his chance.
