Rishabh Pant-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have found themselves in unexpected drama. Aiden Markram has publicly expressed his displeasure over Lucknow Super Giants’ decision to replace Mitchell Marsh with his successful opening batsman in the ongoing IPL 2026.

The LSG team management surprised everyone by promoting captain Rishabh Pant to the top spot in the ongoing 2026 season, thereby breaking the partnership of Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram, which was working perfectly for them in the last season. Unfortunately, this big gamble didn’t pay off at all.

Initial experiment of LSG was a big flop

In his first IPL 2026 match against Delhi Capitals, Rishabh Pant could only score 7 runs at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. On the other hand, Aiden Markram looked shaky and was out for 11 off 8 after being pushed to No. 3 against Delhi Capitals.

The changes cost them dearly as LSG were bowled out for only 141 runs and lost the game at home. This decision was heavily criticized on social media and many people condemned it.

Aiden Markram’s strong reaction on reshuffle in batting order

Ahead of LSG’s IPL 2026 match against SRH, Markram finally addressed the matter. The South African batsman tried to remain calm by saying that he was ready to make adjustments for the team, but ultimately admitted that there is a “slight difference” between batting at number three and opening.

Even Markram said he would love to open the innings for the franchise, as he rebuilt his T20 career as an opening batsman for Lucknow Super Giants last year. Naturally, being pushed down now feels as if she has been taken away from her comfort zone.

“I think there is a slight difference. Naturally, when opening, you know what to expect first and how they are going to attack you,” Aiden Markram told the broadcasters ahead of the SRH vs LSG match.

“At number three, in some 3-4 overs of the innings, some things come up, and you might not get what you expected. But I enjoy opening. I enjoy the top three, especially in this format of the game. I think it’s good to try to bat as much as possible in the middle.”

Lucknow Super Giants have decided to play with a very strong five-bowler attack in the current season. That means LSG’s top six batsmen will have to carry the entire scoring burden, but Aiden Markram played down talk of extra pressure.

However, the Proteas star admitted that the batting unit needs to perform consistently. Markram signed off by saying, “You want to try to bring all the bowlers in, especially in a competition where the batsmen find it a bit easier. So, you want to try to bring them all in.

The only way for us to do that is for the top six or seven to really take ownership and score all the runs, and then we allow ourselves to play five really good bowlers. So, I don’t think it puts extra pressure on us, but just being aware of it and understanding how the team is structured.
