In form of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 enters a critical phase, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) They seem to be regaining their rhythm and climbing the table with clinical performances. However, amid the team’s resurgence, a significant shadow remains: the inconsistent form of their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad. While the “Yellow Army” is celebrated for its tactical stability, the captain’s personal struggles at the top of the order have sparked intense debate among experts about his role in the playing eleven.
CSK is gaining momentum amid poor performance of Ruturaj Gaikwad
After a poor start to the season, the Super Kings have successfully returned to winning ways. The middle-order has strengthened and the bowling unit is looking sharper than ever. Nevertheless, the opening slot remains a point of vulnerability. Gaikwad, who is usually the fulcrum of CSK’s innings, has struggled to provide the required explosive start in the powerplay. While the team has been winning, their inability to rotate starts or maintain a high strike rate has put undue pressure on the latter’s batsmen, leading many to wonder whether a tactical shuffle is necessary to optimize the team’s balance.
Irfan Pathan picks Ruturaj as ideal batting number to get his form back
Former Indian all-rounder and cricket analyst Irfan Pathan Considering this dilemma it has been suggested that Gaikwad’s current batting philosophy is more suited to one-down positions rather than the opening slot. Analyzing the captain’s recent performances, Pathan pointed out that Gaikwad’s low-risk approach is hindering the team’s powerplay momentum.
“Ruturaj Gaikwad’s batting approach definitely needs attention. If one considers his approach in the last match, he faced 17 balls and his control percentage was excellent. It means he did not take too many risks and was not looking to play too aggressively. He did not want to lose his wicket.” Pathan said on his YouTube channel.
Pathan said that if Gaikwad wants to play the role of an anchor who gives priority to wicket protection, he should go lower down the order.
“So just play at No. 3. If he wants to continue this approach, he should bat at No. 3. But if he wants to open, like Ruturaj Gaikwad, his approach has to change.” Added Pathan.
Managing the slump: The way forward for CSK
Dealing with a poor captaincy is a delicate task for any franchise. For CSK, the solution may lie in flexibility. By moving Gaikwad to No. 3, the management can pair a more aggressive “pinch-hitter” or a natural stroke-maker with the other opener to maximize the powerplay overs. The change will give Gaikwad a chance to build an innings without the immediate pressure of on-field restrictions.
If Gaikwad can rediscover his attacking intent, he will remain one of the most dangerous openers in the league. If not, moving into the anchor role at No. 3 could be exactly what both he and Chennai need to secure another title.
