Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are ready for a major leadership change ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 after Rishabh Pant Resigned as captain after a disappointing campaign. Former Indian opening batsman Wasim Jaffer Supported the decision and called it a positive step for both the franchise and the player. Jaffer believes Pant can now focus solely on his batting and wicket-keeping, while LSG is looking for a new leader who can bring the team back into contention.
Wasim Jaffer supported Rishabh Pant’s decision to step down from captaincy
Pant’s tenure as LSG captain came under intense scrutiny after the franchise endured a tough IPL 2026 season and finished bottom of the points table. The wicketkeeper-batsman, who came to the franchise for a record-breaking fee of ₹27 crore, was unable to inspire a turnaround despite entering the role with significant expectations.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer said that the decision to step down from captaincy was the right one, whether it was taken by the player or the franchise management. According to the former India batsman, leadership responsibilities often demand a calm and calculated approach, something that doesn’t naturally mesh with Pant’s easy-going style.
Jaffer pointed out that Pant has spontaneity and aggression, qualities that make him a dangerous cricketer but can create challenges when handling the tactical and emotional demands of captaincy. He stressed that stepping down should not be seen as a setback, but as an opportunity for Pant to maximize his strengths as a player.
“I think it’s a good decision, whether it’s what the franchise is telling him or his own decision. Decision in the right direction. You are keeping wickets and being reactive and impulsive.” Jafar said.
The former opening batsman also pointed out that captaincy can sometimes become an unnecessary burden for players whose primary strengths lie elsewhere. In the case of Pant, Jaffer feels that removing the leadership duties could allow him to focus solely on his batting and wicketkeeping, in which he has consistently proved his usefulness.
Pant is one of the most explosive players in world cricket and LSG are expected to continue building their batting unit around him. With the captaincy no longer resting on his shoulders, the franchise will be hoping that the left-hander can return to the match-winning form that has made him one of the most sought-after players in the league.
“A captain should control his emotions. It is not his fault but his nature. He should not become a captain. He has to accept that he cannot do things like planning or handling players. He struggles as a leader. There is nothing wrong in that, just play as a player. Good decision and in the right direction.” Jafar added.
Jaffer’s choice for LSG captaincy candidates
Discussing LSG’s future leadership plans, Jaffer identified two experienced international cricketers as strong contenders for the captaincy role – the South Africans. aiden markram and australia’s Michelle Marsh.
Both players have leadership experience at the international level and the tactical nous required to manage a high-profile IPL team. However, Jaffer seemed particularly impressed by Markram’s temperament, highlighting his calm presence and ability to take composed decisions under pressure.
Markram’s leadership abilities, coupled with his balanced approach on the field, could make him an attractive option for franchises looking for stability after a turbulent period. Meanwhile, Marsh brings extensive experience, strong communication skills, and the respect of teammates, making him another viable candidate for the position.
