race for ipl 2026 The playoffs have taken another dramatic turn, and this time, the spotlight is firmly on defensive spirit and resurgence Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). After spending a large part of the season struggling at the bottom of the table, KKR have suddenly transformed into one of the most dangerous teams in the competition.

Former batting coach of India Sanjay Bangar believes that if the three-time champions continue their remarkable run of form towards the end of the season then they are capable of pulling off the biggest comeback in IPL history.

KKR have won four consecutive matches, which has dramatically improved their playoff chances and restored confidence within the camp. His recent performances have shown a complete turnaround in both the batting and bowling departments, especially with the spin attack becoming a major weapon once again.

Speaking on Jio Hotstar, Bangar explained how momentum can completely change the fortunes of any team at the business end of the tournament.

Sanjay Bangar highlights KKR’s improving balance

According to Bangar, KKR are finally starting to look like a settled and confident unit after several weeks of uncertainty. He said that the team now looks more balanced, the batsmen are performing consistently and the bowlers are executing plans with much more discipline. Bangar particularly praised the effectiveness of the spin department, which has historically played a big role in Kolkata’s success over the years.

“KKR have won four matches in a row. The balance of their team looks strong. The spin attack has regained its strength and the batting unit has been performing consistently. They are peaking at the right time, which matters most in a long tournament.” Bangar said.

The former India coach also emphasized that teams that enter the final stages of the tournament with confidence and momentum often become the toughest opponents during the playoffs.

“Teams that build momentum towards the business end often end up in the playoffs. KKR are in a very good position right now. That’s why their playoff chances have increased significantly,” He added.

KKR’s historic comeback

Despite their revival, the road ahead for KKR is still tough. The team is currently placed eighth in the IPL 2026 points table with nine points from ten matches. However, with four league matches still remaining, qualification is mathematically within reach.

Bangar believes that winning all four remaining games can turn KKR’s campaign into one of the most memorable recovery stories of the IPL so far.

“If they win their remaining four matches, they will make one of the biggest comebacks in IPL history. From the bottom of the table to the top four, that would be a remarkable turnaround. It will take a special effort, but given the form they have been in, it seems possible.” Bangar said.

The timing of KKR’s resurgence has made the race for the playoffs even more intense, especially with many teams still fighting for the limited qualification spots.
