However, despite his form, the Royals have opted to use him as an impact player in the last two matches – a tactical decision that limits his involvement to batting duties only. This has sparked discussion among fans and experts alike, especially considering the youngster’s all-round energy on the field.
Rajasthan Royals assistant coach speaking during the match trevor penney Throw light on the reasoning behind this move and Suryavanshi’s reaction to it. Penny admitted that the teenager was not entirely happy with the role, not because of any shortcomings, but because of his passion for fielding.
“The last game he missed, he wasn’t too happy about because he likes his fielding. It’s not because he’s a bad fielder.” Penny told during a conversation with the broadcasters.
Team balance forces tough selection calls
Penny further clarified that the decision was largely influenced by the team balance and the return of the South African all-rounder Donovan Ferreira. Ferreira, who has been recovering from a collarbone injury suffered during the SA20 earlier this year, recently passed his fitness test.
“Donovan has passed his fitness test. He broke his collarbone in the SA20. He is a gun fielder. It’s good to have him back on the field. Sadly, Vaibhav missed out.” Penny added.
It appears that the management is preferring a combination that offers flexibility in both batting and fielding, even if it means restricting one of their brightest young talents.
