Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) legends Virat Kohli Has finally addressed the low-key but widely discussed debate about his ‘overseas player’ status after his family moved to London. The former Indian captain, known for his sharp wit, chose humor over controversy, making it clear that speculation doesn’t bother him.
The discussion took hold on social media last year, especially as Kohli continues to represent RCB – the only IPL franchise he has played for since the league began. With IPL 2026 set to begin, the conversation resurfaced, prompting Kohli to respond during a casual chat with the franchise.
Instead of giving a serious explanation, Kohli handled the situation in his trademark style – with a mix of confidence and humour.
Why did the ‘foreign player’ tag start trending on Virat Kohli?
The origins of the debate can be traced back to early 2024, when Kohli and his family shifted their base to London following the birth of their son Akay. Since then, he has been spending considerable time in the United Kingdom, mainly traveling to India for cricket commitments.
This change in lifestyle led to a flood of jokes online, with some fans cheekily suggesting that Kohli should be counted as an ‘overseas player’ for RCB due to his extended stay abroad. The narrative, though largely humorous, gained momentum as the IPL season approached.
Despite Kohli’s consistent presence and performances for the franchise, some also questioned his involvement and commitment. The idea of him being treated as the ‘fifth foreign player’ became a topic of discussion, which mixed humor with curiosity.
However, to those following his career closely, this suggestion always remained more of a playful exaggeration than a serious claim.
Kohli’s witty reply and reflection on the glory of IPL
Kohli finally addressed the topic during a fun segment with RCB’s in-house host Danish Sait, who appeared on his popular ‘Mr. Personality of Nags. Playing with the online narrative, Sait joked: “People are saying that RCB is playing five foreign players, I don’t understand what they are actually saying.”

Kohli, without missing a beat, replied with a smile: “I don’t know, why are you asking me? Ask foreign players. I’m not a foreign player. Am I a foreign player?”
His answer instantly impressed fans, not only for its humor but also for its astute frankness. By turning the question around in a humorous manner, Kohli rejected the debate outright and reiterated his identity.
Apart from joking, the conversation also took place on another emotional topic – RCB’s long-awaited IPL win in 2025. After years of near misses, the franchise finally won its first title, and for Kohli, it was an extremely personal milestone.
Recalling that moment he said: “I had heard about this statement or this saying, Four Years, Monkey from Back. That night I really felt what it meant. Everything became lighter.”
The win ended an 18-season wait for Kohli, who has been the face of the franchise since its inception. It wasn’t just about winning trophies – it was about validation.
he adds: “Victory is the accumulation of hard work, of all the sacrifices you’ve made… It all comes together as the reassurance, the reward, of knowing you haven’t wasted your time.”
