Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka DK Shivakumar has emphatically shut down all speculations regarding shifting of IPL matches from Bengaluru, assuring that all the matches of the 2026 season will remain at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Speaking after casting his vote in the KSCA elections, Shivakumar said that while losing the IPL was unacceptable, he sees the tournament as a symbol of state pride.
He directly addressed inquiries about relocating matches, including the IPL, following the stadium tragedy and gave a firm, clear statement: “It is an honor for the state of Karnataka and Bengaluru. We will take steps to ensure that the next IPL matches are held here.” Shivkumar emphasized his personal commitment to the game, saying, “I am a cricket fan.”
He said the government will ensure that all available cricket matches, including women’s cricket games, will be hosted: “We will allow whatever matches become available in the coming days.” Rejecting reports citing security and structural concerns, his assurance stands as a significant political commitment to maintain Bengaluru’s position as the central hub for Indian cricket.

Commitment to security upgrades and plans for a new stadium
The Deputy CM’s assurance came with a clear commitment to address the security concerns that led to the temporary suspension of the stadium following the stampede during the RCB title ceremony that tragically claimed 11 lives. The incident, which occurred due to huge crowd, raised serious questions on crowd management and the infrastructure of the venue.
Shivakumar elaborated on the government’s dual strategy to restore the stadium’s reputation and expand the city’s cricket potential: “We will take care that the recent disaster does not happen again and ensure that the dignity of the stadium is maintained.” He stressed that moving forward, the facility will be operated with strict legal and security measures in place: “The stadium will be developed by managing crowd within the legal framework.”
Furthermore, he revealed a long-term plan to develop new infrastructure, which would be a contingency and a way to support the growing demand for large-scale matches: “Besides, we will also build a bigger stadium as an option.” This comprehensive plan has been created to safeguard the future of major cricket events in Bengaluru.
