Three-time IPL champion, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)In a significant change to their squad ahead of the upcoming season, Zimbabwean fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani has been announced as the replacement for Bangladesh pacer. Mustafizur Rahman.

After this the Knight Riders were forced to reshuffle their bowling lineup. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Instructed the franchise to release Mustafizur from their team before the tournament. The decision reportedly came amid political tensions between India and Bangladesh, which ultimately affected the player’s participation in the league.

Mustafizur was bought by KKR for ₹9.20 crore during the auction and was expected to play a key role in the team’s bowling strategy. Known for his variety of left-arm pace and ability to perform well under pressure in the death overs, he was considered a valuable addition to the team. However, his sudden exit forced the franchise to immediately look for an alternative foreign fast bowler.

Bowling failure forces KKR to look for reinforcements

Mustafizur’s departure was one of several blows to KKR’s pace attack ahead of the season. The bowling department of the team has already been affected by several unfortunate incidents.

Young Indian fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the entire IPL 2026 season after suffering a knee injury shortly before the T20 World Cup. Rana was expected to be a key part of the domestic pace unit and his absence has further reduced the team’s bowling options.

Adding to the uncertainty, Sri Lankan fast bowler Mathiesha Pathirana – one of KKR’s most exciting overseas players – is currently undergoing rehabilitation. His availability for the early stages of the tournament remains unclear, creating additional concerns for the team management.

Due to a number of issues affecting their pace department, the franchise needed to act quickly to fill the gap. The arrival of Blessing Muzarabani is therefore being seen as an important step to stabilize the bowling attack before the start of the season.

KKR’s new contract brings momentum and form to the team

Muzarabani comes into the team with strong recent performances and a growing reputation in international cricket. The 29-year-old fast bowler was one of the standout performers in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026.

He finished the tournament as the joint-third highest wicket-taker, taking 13 wickets in just six matches as Zimbabwe performed impressively at the Super Eight stage.

Standing at 6 feet 8 inches tall, Muzarabani is known for producing sharp bounce and troubling batsmen with his pace and awkward angles. His height and natural pace make him particularly effective on surfaces that offer little support to fast bowlers.

In the shortest format of the game, the Zimbabwean fast bowler has already made a solid record. He has taken over 90 wickets in over 80 T20 Internationals while maintaining an impressive bowling average of around 21.

While the IPL 2026 tournament will mark his official debut, Muzarabani is not completely new to the league. Last season, he was a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team as a replacement player, although he did not get a chance to play the match.

His commitment to joining KKR was also evident when he decided to opt out of his contract with Islamabad United for the upcoming Pakistan Super League (IPL) season, preferring the IPL opportunity.

Muzarabani is expected to reach Kolkata on March 17, where he will join his new teammates and begin preparations for the season.

KKR will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on March 29.
