South African left-arm fast bowler Marco Johnson finally got the success he was looking for and the entire Eden Garden went silent in an instant after the cheap dismissal of young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal on the first day of the ongoing first Test in Kolkata.

Yashasvi Jaiswal tried to play a cut shot off Marco Jensen, which did not give him enough space and things went horribly wrong. Jensen pulled his length back, Jaiswal tried to force it off the backfoot and the ball hit his leg stump with an inside edge.

Yashasvi Jaiswal got out for 12 runs and Marco Johnson shocked Eden Gardens.

The left-handed batsman stood there for a while in disappointment before walking back after scoring 12 runs with three fours in 27 balls against South Africa at the Eden Gardens.

Earlier, South Africa were looking strong at 105 for 3 at lunch, but by the end of the day the scoreboard was telling a completely different story. The collapse began when Jasprit Bumrah broke the opening stand in classic style at the Eden Gardens.

Eden Gardens has become a nightmare for South Africa

First, Ryan Rickelton was beaten by an accurate ball that went away at the last moment, and soon after, Aiden Markram curled a sharply rising ball, putting South Africa under immediate pressure. Kuldeep Yadav then joined the attack and bowled a beautifully controlled spell.

The wrist spinner’s clever variation trapped captain Temba Bavuma, who walked back disappointed after taking a sharp catch by Dhruv Jurel behind the stumps. With that blow the visitors slipped to three wickets and were struggling to build any real momentum on an unevenly bouncy Eden Gardens pitch.

After lunch, Bumrah and Kuldeep continued to tighten the screws. Both of them struck quickly one after the other and pushed South Africa into deep trouble by reducing five wickets to 120 runs. Mohammed Siraj then took over the responsibility of damage control for India and delivered two crucial breakthroughs, dismantling the middle order and leaving South Africa reeling at just 147 runs by seven wickets.

In the final session, Bumrah returned for one last spell and cleaned up the tail with brutal accuracy. His pace led to the fall of two more wickets, as South Africa were all out for just 159 runs. In the first match of the ongoing two-match Test series in Kolkata, Bumrah’s five-wicket haul helped India completely dominate the first day, putting South Africa under immense pressure.

Yashasvi Jaiswal opens up about Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli’s legacy and his own path

Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal has opened up about the influence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, saying that these two modern greats have inspired an entire generation of cricketers, including him. With India entering a new phase in Test cricket, many see Jaiswal as his replacement, but he has made it clear that he is not trying to replace anyone.

Jaiswal said that the legacy of Rohit and Kohli is so big that no one can match it and he does not see himself taking their place. Instead, the left-handed batsman wants to focus on his game, rely on his strengths and continue to grow as a cricketer in his own style.

Yashasvi Jaiswal said on JioHotstar, “What Rohit bhaiya and Virat bhai have done in their careers is incredible. They have inspired an entire generation, including me. I look at this as an opportunity to learn from them and give my best. I know I can’t fill their shoes, but I will play to my strengths and play with confidence.”
