Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer out, captaincy handed over to KL Rahul
India’s regular ODI captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer have been ruled out of the entire 50-over series due to their respective injuries.
Shreyas Iyer has been out of action for some time as he suffered a serious injury during the last ODI series against Australia. While fielding in Sydney, he was injured on impact after taking a catch running backwards from point to dismiss Alex Carey.
Iyer managed to complete a stunning catch, but it proved to be quite disastrous for him as he got seriously injured and was briefly admitted to the ICU before undergoing a minor procedure. He is currently recovering but will return to competitive cricket just before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
Talking about captain Shubman Gill, he suffered a neck injury during the opening match of the Test series against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata after facing only three balls and injured the back of his neck.
He is currently recovering from the injury and the decision has been taken to rest him due to fear of worsening of neck spasms.
Talking about other key points from the team announcement, Ruturaj Gaikwad has returned to the ODI setup and will compete with Yashasvi Jaiswal for a spot at the top of the order.
Young left-handed batsman Tilak Verma has also been selected and will be in direct competition with Rishabh Pant for the No. 4 spot in the playing eleven.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have been rested for the series, while Ravindra Jadeja has returned to the ODI squad, Axar Patel has been left out – possibly due to workload management.
