In a shocking incident during a local match in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, a minor dispute led to the death of a 21-year-old umpire who was entrusted with such responsibilities during the game. Local police said the man was stabbed to death following a large-scale brawl following a run-out decision.
According to NDTV report, the victim, Dola Ajith Babu, was umpiring a local match along with his friend Budumuri Chiranjeevi on Sunday when a massive altercation broke out between players from the two areas; However, no one could have imagined this treacherous outcome.
According to police sources to NDTV, the umpires immediately intervened and managed to defuse the situation on the field. However, even after the umpires withdrew, they did not calm down completely.
After the match, spectator Kanta Kishore stabbed the umpire.
One spectator of the game was a man named Kanta Kishore, who had no connection with either of the teams. The man allegedly started abusing and when the match ended, the situation escalated to a great extent.
Police said the umpires called him to a nearby venue and under the pretext of resolving the dispute, he escalated the matter, leading to a large-scale carnage. “Another argument broke out and the teenager suddenly took out a knife and attacked them,” a police officer told NDTV.
Umpire Ajit Babu was hit by a knife on his chest and he immediately collapsed on the spot. His friend Chiranjeevi also got injured while trying to save the other one. All the injured were taken to a nearby hospital, while Ajit Babu was declared dead when taken to Apollo Hospital.
Police registered a case of murder after the complaint of the victim’s father.
Quoting the victim’s brother, NDTV said that the dispute over a run had already been resolved by the village elders. however, The accused allegedly returned later under the influence of alcohol and carried out the attack with premeditated intent.
The complaint was lodged with the police by the victim’s father Dola Appala Raju, after which the police registered a case of murder against him. A case was registered against him under relevant sections of the Indian Judicial Code. They have also started a search operation to trace him, as he is absconding since the incident.
