The sixth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) is scheduled to take place in Colombo, Candy and Dambullah from 1 December to 23 December. In particular, the organizers confirmed that Indian cricketers would participate in the competition for the first time, add enthusiasm to the upcoming T20 tournament.
The Lanka Premier League was reinstated to better align with the 2026 T20 World Cup. In particular, the tournament will be played in 24 days, the longest in the history of the league. A total of 24 matches, 20 league-stage matches and four knockout games, Sri Lanka will be played at three prominent places.
Indian players are ready to feature in Lanka Premier League
On Monday, the organizers confirmed that the Indian players would participate in the Lanka Premier League for the first time, with their names being announced soon, expected to generate significant enthusiasm among fans.
A press release said, “For the first time, Indian cricketers are expected to be involved in action, their names will be revealed soon, which will increase a new level of enthusiasm for fans throughout the region.”
The Lanka Premier League will follow a round-robin format. All five franchisees will face each other twice during the league stage. At the conclusion of the round-robin stage, the top four teams on the points table will qualify for the playoffs.
The first playoff, qualifier 1, will facilitate the top two teams, in which the winner will go ahead in the final. Meanwhile, teams, who finished third and fourth, will clash in the eliminator. The winner of that match will then be met by the loser of qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2, who will determine the second finalist.
LPL has emerged as a fertility ground – tournament director
LPL tournament director Samantha Dodnvela said that the schedule of this edition is designed to provide valuable match exercises to the players before the T20 World Cup 2026.
Samantha Dodnvela said, “The time of this version has been carefully selected to ensure that the players get maximum exposure and high quality match exercises led to the global cricketing year.”
“On the season, LPL has emerged as a breeding ground for fresh talent, many youth have made their mark with international stars. This year too, we believe that the league will throw out exciting new names that can go to the spring surprise on the World Forum ahead of the World Cup.”
Lanka face scheduling clash with Premier League ILT20 and BBL
The Lanka Premier League is Sri Lanka’s major domestic T20 tournament, since its inception in 2020, working as a major platform for both local players and international stars.
Defending champions Jaffna Kings, who captained Charith Asanka, claimed the 2024 title after defeating Galle Titans, strengthening their dominance and strengthening their heritage in the league.
The 2025 version is direct competition from other major global T20 leagues. The UAE’s ILT20 runs from 2 December to 4 January, while Australia’s Big Bash League is scheduled from 14 December to 25 January, which attracts the attention of international players and fans.
