Former Indian assistant coach Abhishek Nair praised Rohit Sharma for bringing about a change in India’s white-ball cricket with his fearless form of the game. He has also praised Virat Kohli for making tactical adjustments in his batting style.
Two Indian legends have literally changed the direction of Indian cricket. Rohit Sharma has scored 273 runs in 5 matches since his return at an average of 68.25 with a strike rate of over 100.
Former India cricketer Abhishek Nair, who is known as Rohit Sharma’s best friend, has credited Rohit Sharma for revolutionizing white-ball cricket in India. He has changed Indian cricket with his aggressive brand of strokeplay.
Analyzing Rohit Sharma’s development as an ODI batsman, Abhishek Nair said (as quoted by IANS), “Rohit has made a good transition in ODIs. From starting lower down the order early in his career to becoming a safe opening batsman.”
“This is where he really flourished, he changed the way India played white-ball cricket by taking an aggressive approach focusing on hitting sixes rather than just scoring runs. His leadership by example, playing without worrying about centuries, has raised the standards of the team,” Nair told Geostar.
Abhishek Nair decodes Rohit Sharma’s no-step-out policy against South Africa
Rohit made a explosive start to the series in Australia; However, in the South Africa series, he has restricted himself from getting out of the crease for big hits. Abhishek Nair explains why Sharma has suddenly brought about this change in the type of his strokeplay in limited overs cricket.
Abhishek Nair has also said that Rohit Sharma has not been using his usual strategy of moving down the track against the seamers, and due to this, he has said that “Rohit has not stepped up to hit the big shots mainly because of the swinging conditions in this series.”
“He faces the bowlers with confidence when he feels the ball is not swinging much. He is careful with his footwork due to the uncertain pitch bounce. But in the familiar Vizag conditions, we will probably see the return of his aggressive stepping-out game,” Nair said.
Abhishek Nair praised Virat Kohli’s brilliant strategy
Abhishek Nair has also highlighted his opinion about Virat Kohli’s excellent form and his execution of shots at many crucial moments of the game. He said that Kohli usually brings his bat straight down on contact with the ball and added that this is something new which he has improved in his technique.
“But here, every time you see him hit the ball, his head is right on top of it. It happens very regularly. He brings the bat straight to the ball, even when the ball is going away. He manages to play it straight all the time. That is his greatness and the main reason why he is so successful,” Abhishek Nair said.
Speaking about the tactical changes Kohli brought to his batting after the limited success in the Australia series, Nair claimed that Kohli has been alternating between his guards in the last two ODI innings. He is defending leg, off or middle stump on different balls. He further said that Kohli is using his footwork more and the conditions have also helped him in the new style of cricket he wants to play.
