The win marks a defining moment for Indian women’s cricket, showcasing their rise as a global force and ending years of failure on the world stage. Batting first, India posted a strong score of 298/7 on the back of a fearless innings from Shafali Verma, who scored a brilliant 87 off 78 balls. She shared a 104-run partnership with Smriti Mandhana (45) โ only the second century partnership in a Women’s World Cup final. Later, Deepti Sharma (58) and Richa Ghosh (34 off 24) added valuable runs in the death overs as India crossed the 290 mark and set South Africa a tough target in front of a packed home crowd.
India’s bowling unit, led by Deepti Sharma, produced a match-winning performance to give the country the long-awaited world title. Deepti followed up her batting heroics by taking an extraordinary five wickets (5/39) and tore apart South Africa’s middle order with her accuracy and flying. She created history by becoming the first player in Women’s World Cup Knockout history to score a half-century and take five wickets in the same match. Supported by two wickets from Shafali and a disciplined spell from Sri Charani, India bowled out South Africa for 246 runs in 45.3 overs.
For South Africa, Captain Laura Wolvaardt scored a brilliant 101 runs in 98 balls.That was before India’s spinners changed the game decisively, keeping their team in contention.
