KL Rahul-led Team India lost another toss during the second ODI against South Africa at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur on Wednesday, December 3. The Men in Blue have extended their unwanted world record of losing the toss in One Day Internationals to 20.

India lost the toss for the second consecutive time in the three-match series, giving South Africa the early advantage once again in conditions where dew could have played a crucial role. After winning the first ODI by 17 runs, India will be hoping to extend their lead while the visitors, led by Temba Bavuma, will aim to level the series.

India loses 20th consecutive ODI toss, unwanted world record continues

India has now created an unmatched record in men’s international cricket by losing the toss in 20 consecutive ODI matches. This trend began with the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad and has continued during every bilateral and multi-nation ODI played since then.

Netherlands had previously achieved the next longest win by losing 11 consecutive toss between 2011 and 2013. India has now almost doubled this figure, creating a record that no other team has come close to.

The Men in Blue will be hoping this unusual streak will end soon, but the tally has already reached an unwanted 20 consecutive toss defeats. However, the team has performed well in recent matches despite losing the toss and even won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 without losing a single match.

I have been practicing very hard – KL Rahul on the toss

At the time of the toss, KL Rahul joked that he was “trying hard” to win the toss. Rahul said that India were prepared to bowl with the expected dew and they had discussed their plans in depth.

“We know what to expect. The boys look in good shape. And I am excited about this game. Even before the series, we talked about it (dew). This is a time in India where there is a lot of dew. We are expecting dew wherever we play. So, the bowlers have talked about it. There are some strategies and some things we have talked about, which I think we did really well in the last game. So, This will give a lot of confidence to our bowling team,” Rahul said.
