Shivam Dubey is currently one of the few bowlers in world cricket who is slowly but surely progressing in his game. Five years ago, when he made his T20 International debut for Team India, he was mostly recognized as a power hitter who could turn the match from the back end of the batting order. Due to his hitting abilities, some people started comparing Dubey with Indian cricket legend Yuvraj Singh.

Currently, Dube is much more than a slugger or power hitter; He has developed himself as a fast bowling all-rounder. Ahead of India’s Super 8 match with South Africa, Team India bowling coach Morne Morkel shared the story of Shivam Dube’s growth.

“This journey with Shivam Dubey started more than a year ago when we gave him the responsibility of bowling for us in Dubai, even the first over,” Morkel said.

The former South African fast bowler said that the entire coaching staff was supporting the Mumbai-born player during his development process. He also considered this all-rounder to be a very talented prospect.

The bowling coach said, “As soon as you feel in that environment that you have the support of the captain, coach and staff, life becomes easier. You don’t need to prove yourself or put in too much effort. He has a lot of skill with the ball and variations; for him, it was just about building confidence and knowing how to use those variations.”

Notable bowling statistics of Shivam Dubey

Dubey was a member of India’s victorious team in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Now he is playing in the 2026 T20 World Cup. In the span of 2 years, the all-rounder has honed his bowling skills so much that he is contributing with the ball in every match.

During the last edition of the ICC T20 WC, he bowled only one over in 8 matches. In the current campaign, after playing 4 matches, he has 3 wickets in 5.2 overs, including figures of 2/35. Last year in Dubai, when India was in the Men’s T20 Asia Cup, Dubey took 5 wickets in 6 matches.

He is hungry: Morkel

Morkel further explains, as a big hitter, Shivam Dubey himself is well aware of a batsman’s strengths and potential weaknesses. He practiced accordingly in the nets. Morkel was happy to see the all-rounder longing for more wickets.

“As a power hitter, he works out which ball is the hardest to bowl. We have supported him and said, ‘If you go to a limit, that’s fine. You are a guy who can take wickets for us and bring ball control.’ We gradually developed this, and many times I saw him walk away disappointed at not having a bowl, which was great for me to see. He’s hungry,” Morkel said.
