Earlier, Pakistan captain Abbas Afridi won the toss and elected to bowl first and India took full advantage of the quick six-over format by posting a strong score of 86/4 on the board. Chasing the target, Pakistan struggled to find rhythm and could only manage 41/3 when rain interrupted play.
As the rain called last, the Hong Kong Sixes 2025 encounter between India and Pakistan was decided by the DLS method, giving Dinesh Karthik’s team a narrow victory. Robin Uthappa was adjudged Player of the Match for his brilliant innings of 28 runs with the help of 2 fours and 3 sixes in 11 balls.
Both India and Pakistan have been placed in Pool C along with Kuwait. A total of 12 teams have been divided into four groups of three each in the tournament. Each team plays fast-paced six-a-side matches, making the tournament one of the most entertaining events in the cricket calendar.
The Hong Kong Sixes was first launched in the early 1990s. It ran successfully from 1993 to 1997 and again between 2001 and 2012, but the event had a one-off edition in 2017, and has now been revived once again last year. This version brings back the excitement among the fans.
Meanwhile, India were earlier dealt a blow as senior all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin was ruled out of the ongoing Hong Kong Sixes 2025 due to a knee injury. Ashwin’s injury was a big blow, especially when India are aiming to lift the trophy for the first time in two decades.
India has so far won the Hong Kong Sixes title only once, in 2005. Pakistan, on the other hand, have been one of the most successful teams in the history of the Hong Kong Sixers, having won the trophy five times. In last year’s edition, they were runners-up after a narrow defeat to Sri Lanka in the final.
This season too, Pakistan started their campaign with a thrilling win over Kuwait earlier in the day. They needed 29 runs in the last over and they made the impossible possible. Abbas Afridi played a sensational inning of 55 runs in just 12 balls to lead his team to victory.
