India’s leading fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah Added another glorious chapter to his illustrious career during ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 The clash against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday will equal Ravichandran Ashwin’s record of becoming India’s all-time highest wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history.
Record breaking moment: Jasprit Bumrah’s double strike
Bumrah needed three wickets in the match to break Ashwin’s figure of 32 wickets in the T20 World Cup. He did not have to wait long to achieve this feat. In the second over of South Africa’s innings, Bumrah produced a moment of pure magic to clean bowl Quinton de Kock with one ball.
The wicket was quintessential Bumrah – the 137 kmph ball was angled from outside the crease and bounced back sharply to take De Kock’s leg stump. The South African opening batsman, attempting to slog across the line, had no movement on his feet and missed completely, dislocating his stumps. De Kock was out after scoring just 6 runs off 7 balls, giving India the breakthrough it desperately needed.
But Bumra was not finished yet. In his next over, he returned to take his second wicket of the innings – and his 32nd in the T20 World Cup – dismissing Ryan Rickelton, who misjudged a slower ball from Shivam Dubey at mid-off. With those two wickets, Bumrah equaled Ashwin and then surpassed Ashwin’s tally of wickets by dismissing Corbyn Bosh for 5 runs.
Bumrah’s magic shook South Africa
South African captain Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to bat first, hoping to put pressure on the Indian bowling attack. However, Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh had different ideas.
After Arshdeep bowled a tight first over, Bumrah dismissed De Kock in his very first over. He took the wicket of Rickelton in his next over, reducing South Africa to 20/3 inside the powerplay. The Proteas’ top order was flailing, and Bumrah’s figures at the time showed that he took 2 for 6 in 2 overs – a testament to his accuracy and control.
Early successes put India firmly in control, with the defending champions looking to dominate the Super 8 clash. For Bumrah, the three wickets were not just about personal milestones but about giving his team the lead in a match seen as a dress rehearsal for a possible final encounter.
