Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) head coach Andy Flower is likely to continue in his IPL role even if he is appointed England’s next Test head coach. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reviewing its coaching structure after parting ways with Brendon McCullum on Sunday, July 12.
Vacancy opened after this Cricket Board sacks McCullum after England’s 2-1 Test series defeat For New Zealand. McCullum’s resignation, along with Ben Stokes’ retirement from Test cricket, has ended the baseball era and started a new chapter for the England Test team.

ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould said the board is ready to consider candidates who want to continue coaching in franchise cricket. He said the ECB’s priority is to appoint the best coach, even if compromises are required.
“We need to be progressive on these issues,” Gould said. “We have players who are trying to balance county, franchise, international cricket. It’s a really busy calendar. We may have to do the same with our coaching staff and support staff; we are already doing that to some extent. But I think it’s something we have to look at.”
“One of the difficulties is that the IPL dates are not fixed, and maybe some compromises have to be made along the way. But the important thing is that we have the best individuals who are best suited and we get them in those positions. It is something we will definitely consider.”
Andy Flower’s record makes him a leading candidate
Brendon McCullum has coached England in 49 Test matches since taking charge in May 2022. They recorded 27 wins, 20 losses and two draws. However, England have lost seven of their last nine Test matches, including a 4–1 Ashes series defeat in Australia and a 2–1 defeat in the recent home series to New Zealand.
Andy Flower is one of England’s most successful coaches. He led the team to the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test rankings and achieved famous Test series wins in Australia and India between 2009 and 2014. He also achieved great success in franchise cricket, leading RCB to consecutive IPL titles.
Andy Flower signed a three-year contract with RCB ahead of the 2024 IPL season. His leadership helped transform the team’s vision and drive continued success. If Andy Flower accepts the England role, the ECB may allow him to continue working with IPL franchises depending on scheduling commitments.

Richard Gould said that England’s recent results have forced the board to make coaching changes. He said that with 10 Test matches before the 2027 Ashes, the ECB wanted to appoint a new coach as soon as possible to begin preparations.
“The results have not been what we wanted. It has always been a results-based business. Results mean we need to make changes. At this particular time, we have 10 Test matches until the Ashes start in 2027, and so with the new coach coming in we have enough time to prepare again, we want to utilize as much time as we have available.”
England will have to find the next Test coach before the three-match series against Pakistan in August. According to reports, the shortlist includes English candidates like Rahul Dravid, Stephen Fleming, Justin Langer, Mike Hesson and Andy Flower as well as Richard Dawson, Jonathan Trott and James Foster.
