Team India’s experienced cricketer Ajinkya Rahane is the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but questions remain regarding his long-term future. If Rahane steps down in the upcoming Indian Premier League season, left-handed batsman Rinku Singh could emerge as the front-runner to take charge of the team.
Kolkata Knight Riders faced a disappointing campaign in the last edition. Despite winning their third championship title in 2024, the team finished eighth in the points table last year. During Ajinkya Rahane’s first season as franchise captain, the team managed only five wins from 14 matches.
If the post of captaincy becomes vacant then Rinku Singh is the front runner for this post.
If the post becomes vacant then Rinku Singh can emerge as a strong contender to take over the captaincy. Singh has played 59 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders. He has scored 1,099 runs in 51 innings at an average of 30.52 and a strike rate of 145.17, including four fifties, with his best score being 67 not out.
Management expects improvements during the 2026 season. Rinku understands the pressure that comes with representing the Knight Riders. If he is given the captaincy, he has the required tactical mindset to help the team make a comeback.
He has been a reliable match-winner for the franchise across many seasons. Rinku will return to competitive cricket when the team takes on Mumbai Indians on March 29. After the away games, the team will play three consecutive home matches at the Eden Gardens.
Ajinkya Rahane batted strongly for KKR
Despite Kolkata Knight Riders’ overall struggles, Ajinkya Rahane put in impressive batting performances last year. He finished as the leading run-scorer for the franchise.
The right-handed batsman scored 390 runs in 13 innings at an average of over 35 and a strike rate of almost 148. Angkrish Raghuvanshi was the second leading run-scorer for KKR, scoring 90 runs less than Rahane.
Ajinkya Rahane consistently dominated the opposition bowlers during the mandatory powerplay field restrictions. He failed to convert his starts into big scores as he struggled against spin bowlers in the middle overs.
Rahane also looked impressive in the home matches at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. In six home innings he had an average of more than 47 and a strike rate of more than 152. However, if Rahane decides to step down from the captaincy to focus on his batting, the management may promote a newly named captain.
Kolkata Knight Riders have made major changes before the new season
Before the new season, Kolkata Knight Riders have made many changes. Abhishek Nair has been appointed as the new head coach. He will work with assistant coach Shane Watson and bowling coach Tim Southee to improve the overall performance of the players in the dressing room.
Veteran all-rounder Andre Russell has also returned to Kolkata Knight Riders as coaching. Following his retirement from the league, he will join the management team as a designated power coach. He will focus on improving the boundary-hitting ability of the batting unit.
The franchise also executed aggressive strategies during the recent mega auction. The management released several notable players before purchasing Australian all-rounder Cameron Green for ₹25.20 crore.
Whether it is Ajinkya Rahane or Rinku Singh leading the team, Kolkata Knight Riders need players to deliver immediate results to stay in the trophy race.
