Following the resignation of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Shammi Silva and the entire executive committee, a high-level ICC team, including ICC vice-president Imran Khawaja and a high-ranking BCCI official, has reportedly arrived in Sri Lanka, according to PTI.
On 29 April this year, the Sri Lankan government removed the entire top leadership of the SLC, including Silva and other office-bearers. In its place, the government appointed a nine-person transition committee to run things.
change committee
The government-appointed committee is led by opposition politician Eron Wickramaratne. Of the other eight members, only three are former cricketers.
Kumar SangakkaraRoshan Mahanama, and Sidath Wettimuni are former cricketers appointed to the committee. In an official statement, Wickramaratne said that the immediate priority of the committee was ““Complete reconstruction of the governance structure in SLC.”

It was also speculated that the committee might be tasked with rewriting the SLC constitution.
ICC delegation reached Sri Lanka
Reportedly, the ICC delegation led by Khawaja reached Sri Lanka on Friday night. The ouster of all office-bearers and the appointment of a transition committee could mean the ICC will pull up the SLC for government interference.
Generally, the ICC takes strict action against cricket boards if the governments of their respective countries interfere in the administration and day-to-day activities of the board. At the moment, it is still unknown what kind of action the ICC will take in this matter.
This is not the first time the ICC has faced government interference in the Sri Lankan cricket board. In 2023, the ICC suspended the SLC board on the request of then president Shammi Silva. Silva alleged that the Sports Minister was running things within the board at that time.
SLC board resigns after meeting Sri Lankan President
Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Sunil Kumar Gamage publicly confirmed that the government has not officially informed the ICC about the appointment of the transition committee. Reportedly, this statement is the reason for the ICC’s visit to the island nation, but sources say that the ICC was informed informally.
The executive committee led by Silva had originally resigned after a meeting with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Sri Lankan media reports have revealed that the government intervention is due to the declining performance of the national men’s cricket team in recent months. The executive committee reportedly decided to resign en masse in an internal meeting earlier this week, paving the way for the interim body to take charge immediately.
A statement issued after the resignations said, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that Silva has resigned with immediate effect along with the office bearers and executive committee members. The board also said that President Dissanayake and Sports Minister Gamage have been formally informed about the decision.
