Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has named defending champions India and his home team Australia as the two finalists for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. While India has been champion twice, the Australian team has managed to win it once.
The Australians are undoubtedly one of the most challenging opponents in ICC tournaments, no matter the format of the game. However, the mighty Australian team has failed to maintain its reputation in the shortest format of the game.
In contrast, the players in blue have made it to the ICC T20 World Cup knockouts several times and have also been crowned champions twice, first under MS Dhoni in 2007 and then 17 years later in 2024 under captain Rohit Sharma.
Michael Clarke names two finalists for ICC T20 World Cup
The ICC T20 World Cup is one of the most prestigious leagues in the shortest format of the game, and it will once again be played in the 2026 season. The tournament will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
The defending champions won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024 in the United States and the Caribbean and will defend it on home soil. Suryakumar Yadav’s team will be looking for extremely sharp focus in the upcoming tournament.
Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has suggested that India and Australia will be the two finalists for the ICC event. His predictions seemed a bit bold as he ignored England, New Zealand and South Africa for the last spot.
When did Australia win the T20 World Cup title?
Australia last won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021, and this is the only title won by an Australian team in an ICC tournament. Australia won the ICC title for the first time under the leadership of Aaron Finch.
The last time India and Australia played in a World Cup final was during the ICC World Cup 2023, when Australia won their sixth title in the format. Recently, Indians defeated Australia 2-1 in the T-20 series.
India have been placed in Group A along with Pakistan, USA, Netherlands and Namibia, while Australia have a relatively more challenging group as they have been placed in Group B along with Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Oman.
Clarke mocks Pakistan by pointing towards India’s unilateral dominance
Just before the ICC T20 World Cup, when India and Pakistan are getting ready for another clash, and fans are waiting for the much-awaited encounter, Michael Clarke has surprised Pakistan by giving a blunt statement.
Clarke highlighted India’s dominance in the T20 World Cup and how they have defeated them 6 times with only one loss.
“Everyone wants to see it go strong. But India has beaten them (Pakistan) for a long time. Pakistan is not even close. Pakistan needs to be able to deal with the pressure of playing India and that rivalry,” he said.
