Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana has been punished by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his inappropriate behavior during the first match of the ongoing three-match ODI series against Australia.

Tiger Brigade started the bilateral match with an emphatic win over Australia. In the second innings of the first match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka, Nahin Rana found himself in a controversial episode with Australian stand-in captain Josh Inglis.

ICC has accused Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana of breaking the code of conduct.

The Bangladesh pacer dismissed Inglis at a crucial moment of the match, when the middle-order batsman was trying to settle things for his team after suffering a few setbacks at the start of the run chase. Nahid Rana bowled a back-of-the-length delivery on the first ball of the eleventh over, which went away from the batsman.

Inglis took an outside edge in the process as he ground the ball. The ball was behind, where Liton Das made no mistake in taking advantage of the opportunity. It was a fast delivery of 147.9 KMPH by Bangladesh which took the batsman by immediate surprise.

What happened in between?

On the spot itself, Rana showed some aggression towards the late batsman, which was taken seriously by the Council. In an official press release, the ICC charged Nahin Rana with breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

“Naheed (Rana) was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘using language, actions or gestures that are likely to provoke an insulting or offensive reaction when a batsman is out during an international match,'” the ICC said in an official press release.

It is further told that the accused bowler has confessed his crime in front of match referee Prakash Bhatt.

“Naheed pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing,” it said.

It is learned that this is the second time that the Bangladesh international has been accused of breaching the code. In November last year, during a Test match against Ireland in Sylhet, Nahid Rana was given a demerit point and fined 25% of his match fee for aggressively bowling the ball onto the pads of Ireland batsman Cade Carmichael.

Nahid Rana got support from his teammate

On the latest incident against Josh Inglis, Nahid Rana was supported by his teammate Mosaddek Hossain, who blamed the opposing batsman for the episode.

“It was basically the batsman’s frustration after getting out. It was a misunderstanding, nothing serious. What happens on the field is better left on the field,” Mosaddek told reporters at the post-match press conference.

Bangladesh won this match by 86 runs through DLS method. Batting first, they scored 284 runs in 50 overs with the help of Hussain’s unbeaten 86 runs. Australia’s inexperienced playing eleven showed some resilience in the middle, but it was not enough to win the match.
