In a recent development, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced a new rule for replacement “as” players “in domestic first-class cricket. According to the rules, “severe injuries” suffering players will be allowed to replace at any time during the warm-up period during a game.
During the recent Test of Zimbabwe, the issue of serious injuries against England was noted when fast bowler Richard Narwawa suffered a back injury in the early day at Trent Bridge. He later returned to the field, but was not allowed to bowl due to spending too much time from the pitch.
Ngarava was in visible discomfort and eventually left the ground again. This situation has raised calls for more flexible replacement rules in cricket. In particular, the ICC decided to test the “as” injury replacement in domestic first-class matches.

ICC to start a six -month test of the option of injury in domestic first -class cricket
According to a BBC report, ICC is ready for a complete testing of “as” injury replacement in domestic first-class cricket. Currently, replacement is allowed only for convention, while replacement for other injuries is limited to fielding or wicketkeeping duties and cannot bat or bowl.
Full-member nations can test the use of alternatives at any point, provided the injury is severe. The rules will not apply to minor issues such as muscle swallows or hamstring bridges. The option should have a skill set similar to the injured player.
The relevant law states, “The option will not bowl or act as a captain, but can only act as a wicketkeeper with the consent of the umpires.”
Severe injuries can severely affect teams with a complete replacement
A serious injury can leave a team in a significant loss, especially if it loses a prominent bowler or batsman. The runners are no longer allowed, when the players get hurt, the batting sides are also affected.
Earlier this year, Jasprit Bumrah suffered a back injury during the final test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney. Bumrah, who was extraordinary throughout the series, was forced to leave the field, and his absence helped Australia take advantage of and win the series, his first in a decade.
No option could actually match Bumrah’s caliber, but replacement like a similar replacement would have given India another bowling option at least India.
The approval of the replacement rule of injuries may require strict oversight from the umpires
The ICC will start a six -month test in October, allowing full -member countries to use it as replacement for serious injuries in domestic first -class matches. Testing rules currently do not allow complete replacement, except cases except.
If the rule is approved after the test, the umpires will need to be highly cautious to prevent possible misuse. In the past, teams have used regular options strategically, rotating fresh fielders to relax the bowlers.
There is also a concern that the Consulation Protocol has been exploited, allegedly introduced the players to compatible the conditions rather than comparable replacement. The test will help assess whether such replacement can be applied properly and effectively.
