The West Indies cricket team has been forced to sacrifice two crucial points in the ongoing cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) after they were found guilty of not completing the total number of overs in the stipulated time limit during their latest Test match against Sri Lanka in North Sound, St. George’s, Antigua and Barbuda.
Due to slow over rate, the team has also been fined 10 percent of the match fee. Match referee Javagal Srinath has banned West Indies.
Why did West Indies have to sacrifice 2 points?
Team captain Roston Chase was found guilty of violating the rules. The Caribbean captain accepted the proposed sanction.
On 8 July, Wednesday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) issued an official release on its website, stating, “In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time, with a maximum fine of 50 per cent of the match fee.”
Citing another rule of the ICC Code of Conduct, the official press release said, “In accordance with Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship Playing Conditions, a side is penalized one point for each over bowled short.”
Since West Indies were bowled a few overs short of the total within the limited time limit, they had to deduct 2 points.
