The International Cricket Council (ICC) is in a dilemma regarding the venues for the semi-finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Due to Sri Lanka and Pakistan, they have not been able to finalize the venues yet, which may affect the original plans.
According to the latest reports, the semi-final venues will be decided as soon as the fate of Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the Super 8 stage is confirmed. If Pakistan and Sri Lanka qualify for the semi-finals, the venue could be shifted to Sri Lanka.
Where will the semi-finals of T20 World Cup 2026 take place?
Since Pakistan will not be traveling to India due to geopolitical tensions with India, the venue may be changed. And if T20 World Cup 2026 co-hosts Sri Lanka get a chance to play the semi-finals, they may get permission to play on their home soil. But if India qualifies, the equation could change again until India’s clash with Pakistan is decided.
According to a report published by ESPNcricinfo, if Sri Lanka is set to face anyone other than India, and if Pakistan does not reach the semi-finals, Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium will host the match, which appears to be a change from the ICC’s original schedule announcement and tournament playing conditions. The final decision will be taken on the basis of logistics related issues.
As of now, the venues for the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-finals depend on three factors, namely:
1. Arrangements for Semi-Final 1 can be made in Kolkata or Colombo.
2. If Pakistan qualifies for the semi-finals, they will play Semi-Final 1 in Colombo on March 4.
3. If Sri Lanka qualifies and faces someone other than India, Semifinal 1 will be held in Colombo.
The ICC also indicated that if both Pakistan and Sri Lanka are unable to qualify for the semi-finals, both matches will be held in India, with Kolkata and Mumbai being the two venues for the two semi-finals. If India secures a place in the semi-finals and plays someone other than Pakistan, then India’s semi-final match will be played in Mumbai.
What if neither India, Pakistan or Sri Lanka qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-finals?
The report further suggests that if none of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka qualify, then the first-placed team in Group 1 of the T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights will play the second-placed team from Group 2 in Kolkata, and the Group 2 winner will play the Group 1 runner-up in Mumbai.
According to an official release, “If Pakistan qualifies for the semi-finals, Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium will host Semifinal 1 in place of Kolkata. If Pakistan reaches the final, the venue will also be shifted from Ahmedabad to Colombo. If India and Pakistan meet in the semi-finals, that match will be held in Colombo, while if they face any team other than Pakistan, Mumbai will host Semifinal 2, which will also include India. Will be included.”
