Ian Botham warns England of 0-5 threat in Ashes 2025-26 after Perth Test disaster

England’s Ashes 2025-26 campaign has got off to the worst possible start, and one of the game’s biggest legends, Ian Botham, is running out of patience. Ian Botham, one of the greatest all-rounders the game has ever seen, is extremely disappointed after watching England lose to Australia in the opening Ashes match in Perth inside two days.

The former England captain is tired of seeing the same mistakes again and again. England’s famous baseball approach may have seemed exciting at first, but recently it has created more problems than successes. They could not win the Test series in India earlier this year and have now gone 0-1 in the ongoing Ashes 2025-26.

The defeat in Perth was particularly painful. England looked to be losing and their attacking style failed miserably. This has Botham worried that if something does not change soon, Ben Stokes and his team may face a serious whitewash in the five-match Test series in Australia.

“It (Perth) was terrible; there’s no other word for it. England need to fire quickly. I’m fed up of hearing, ‘This is how we play,'” Ian Botham was quoted as saying by the PA news agency. If I hear it one more time I feel like I’m going to throw something at the television. If you play like this, you might as well go home now because it’s going to be 5-0.”

What disappoints him most is the lack of improvement. England are stuck in the same pattern, refusing to adjust or slow down when needed. He believes that players should show more responsibility, more fight and more respect for the situation while playing Test cricket.

The great cricketer further added, “They might not like me saying this, but they need to pay attention to it. I feel more proud when I see people pulling up sweaters.”

Ian Botham calls on Joe Root and Ben Stokes to make their mark in Ashes series

Meanwhile, Botham has revealed that England’s Ashes tour in Australia is putting extra pressure on batting great Joe Root and star all-rounder Ben Stokes. Both have performed brilliantly at home, but winning in Australia is still a big challenge for them.

Stokes made a memorable debut with a century in Australia 12 years ago, while Root is still searching for his first century on Australian soil. The ongoing Ashes series gives him a chance to make his mark and prove himself in one of the toughest cricketing conditions.

Botham further explained, “People remember you for what you have done here. In Joe and Ben, we have got two world-class players – Joe has scored 39 centuries for goodness sake – but they are desperate to make an impact here. You can only do that by winning. They need to get the monkey off their back.”

Ian Botham says victory in Australia will cement the legacy of Joe Root and Ben Stokes

On young players getting a chance in the team, the veteran all-rounder said that it is up to Root and Stokes to move forward. Botham felt that a strong performance in Australia would not only help England but also secure their place in cricket history and give them lasting respect.

Botham concluded by saying, “They’re the two people who will want it the most because many others will get another taste of the cherry. I can tell you from experience, it feels really great to win here, and it means absolute respect. I don’t have a favorite time because every time you beat Australia it’s a great day. That alone should drive England forward.”
