Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has defended Jofra Archer amid criticism over his extended participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The debate intensified after the fast bowler continued to pursue his franchise commitments and missed England’s opening international of the summer.
The controversy revolves around the first Test between England and New Zealand, which began on Thursday, June 4 at Lord’s in London. Archer was not available for the match as his IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals (RR) ended last Friday after their defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT) in Qualifier 2.

There’s another side to it – Ben Stokes on Jofra Archer’s situation
England Test captain Ben Stokes answers questions about Jofra Archer’s absence. Stokes said he understands why some people are disappointed but added that modern cricket is very different from the experience of previous generations.
“I completely understand people’s frustration with it, but there’s another side to it as well. A lot of it has to do with the landscape of cricket and where it is at the moment,” Stokes said.
“People are saying a lot of things about Joff and the situation is related to the scenario when he was playing. But it is completely different now. There are opportunities for cricketers now which were not there 10, 15, 20 years ago.”
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to rest Archer for the opening Test against New Zealand as part of workload management. The fast bowler has been involved in a busy schedule recently which includes the Ashes, T20 World Cup and IPL 2026.
Mark Butcher and Michael Atherton question Jofra Archer’s IPL priorities
Former England opening batsman Mark Butcher criticized Jofra Archer’s absence from the first Test against New Zealand, describing the situation as “absolutely ridiculous”. Former England captain Michael Atherton also questioned the arrangement and argued that England had given too much control to the IPL.
This debate has increased because Archer is reportedly earning around Rs. Are on annual England contracts. 12 crores. Many believe that centrally contracted players should give priority to international cricket. Archer’s availability for the second Test is still uncertain. England head coach Brendon McCullum will assess the fast bowler’s fitness before taking a final decision.
