Joburg Super Kings (JSK) captain Faf du Plessis remembered legendary wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni after his team’s win against Durban Super Giants (DSG) in the SA20 clash. Du Plessis also said that Donovan Ferreira’s brilliant run-out of Ethan Bosh reminded him of Dhoni’s iconic fielding skills.
The Super Kings defeated the Super Giants at Wanderers on Thursday, January 1. After defending a total of 205 runs in 20 overs, the hosts held their composure in the one-over shootout. Ferreira played a key role with bat and ball, while Richard Gleeson came under pressure to ensure victory in a thrilling encounter.
Donovan Ferreira’s thinking forces Wanderers to force Super Over
Durban needed 15 runs to win off the last over, with Simon Harmer and Ethan Bosch at the crease. The pressure was immense and every ball mattered. He fought hard and managed to score 14 runs, taking the game to the last ball.
On the last ball, Mulder bowled outside and Harmer missed his shot. Donovan Ferreira was alert behind the stumps. He had already taken off his glove, collected the ball cleanly and fired straight at the striker’s end.
The throw hit the stumps perfectly. Bosch was far behind his catch and the umpire declared him out. The Wanderers crowd erupted as the match was pushed into a Super Over. It was a moment of pure skill and quick thinking on Ferreira’s part.
I remember a game a long time ago when MS Dhoni… – Faf du Plessis
Faf du Plessis said Donovan Ferreira’s match-changing run out took him back to a famous moment from the past involving MS Dhoni. Du Plessis revealed that he had asked Mulder to bowl short and wide, not expecting a run-out, but the plan worked perfectly with smart fielding.
Du Plessis said, “(On that run out of Donovan Ferreira) Yes, I remember a game a long time ago when MS Dhoni was behind the stumps for India. I think it was against Bangladesh in the World Cup and I remember, the guy bowled a cut ball past him and that memory was in the back of my mind. I had just told Mulder to bowl the short ball past the batsman and I was not counting on run outs. So, we are bowling run outs now. Have been.”
The runout was good for us – Donovan Ferreira
Durban took strike first in the Super Over, but Richard Gleeson took charge and restricted them to just five runs. Joburg followed him without any fuss. Riley Rossouw made quick work of it by hitting two boundaries early on to seal a home win for Joburg Super Kings.
Donovan Ferreira said that the match had been tighter than the team expected, but crucial run-outs helped turn things in their favour. He said that the team has focused on giving the players many responsibilities since the beginning of the tournament.
“The runouts were good for us. Got a little closer there than we would have liked, but luckily we made it. I’m glad I was able to contribute with some runs. Multiple roles is something we’ve been talking about since Game 1, and it looks like that will continue. It’s great to contribute in 3 aspects of the game.” Ferreira said,
