Team India has won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 by defeating New Zealand in the final of the tournament. They became the first team to win the World Cup on home soil and also the first team to win two consecutive T20 World Cup titles. This is the team’s second ICC trophy under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir after winning the Champions Trophy last year.
Ever since Gautam Gambhir joined as the head coach of the team, the Men in Blue have been amazing in ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup. They are currently one of the strongest teams in the white ball format. Gautam Gambhir, as a head coach, a player and a consultant, has not lost a single ICC knockout match.
Is Gautam Gambhir India’s greatest coach?
Gambhir’s excellent record continued in the T20 World Cup also. Despite winning two ICC trophies in two years, GG has been criticized for his straightforward and straightforward approach. There have been rumors of her distant relationship with senior cricketers like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. These two legends of Indian cricket now play only ODI format.
There have been reports that Gambhir does not want Virat and Rohit to play the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, the head coach of Team India has shut down all the rumors at the Triblazers event organized by RevSportz. He talked about how he is human and is allowed to make mistakes.
I should be allowed to make mistakes: Gautam Gambhir
When asked, Boria Majumdar said, ‘There is a lot of noise outside and discussion going on on social media that the head coach is against senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.’
‘Earlier also you had a tweet in which it was said that people are trying to pit the players against you. Since you all share the same dressing room and are working together to win matches for India, how do you deal with this kind of speculation and pressure?’
Gambhir replied, “Look, you are right that I am human. Yes, I am human and I should be allowed to make mistakes. Like anyone else, players should also be allowed to make mistakes. I am sure I have made mistakes in the last 18 months and I do not shy away from that.”

I believe I am doing a fair job – Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir is such an outspoken person who never shies away from supporting his players and also takes care of the dressing room. However, his main challenge has been Test cricket, where he has failed after losing two consecutive home series. However, the intention to win the game is still not far away.
Gambhir further added, “But I have always believed in one thing: a wrong decision taken with the right intentions is acceptable, but a wrong decision taken with the wrong intentions is absolutely not acceptable in that dressing room. Everyone should be allowed to make mistakes. Why shouldn’t cricketers be allowed to make mistakes? They are also human beings.”
“For me, it’s very simple. As long as I’m doing everything honestly and I’m honest with everyone in the dressing room – from the masseurs to the assistant coaches – I can look them in the eye and talk to them honestly. If I can do that, I’m confident I’m doing a fair job in my position. Over the last 18-20 months of my tenure, that’s something I can live with.”
