Middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has been appointed India’s new T20I captain after emerging as the selectors’ favorite choice. According to reports, the decision was followed by extensive discussion, with Iyer’s leadership success in domestic and franchise cricket playing a major role in his promotion.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming T20I tours of Ireland and England. Iyer was made captain in place of Suryakumar Yadav for the two-match series against Ireland.Which will begin in Belfast on June 26 before the five-match series against England.
Gautam Gambhir wanted change, but Ajit Agarkar wanted Shreyas Iyer
According to a report in Cricblogger, there were differing views within the team management and selection committee regarding India’s next T20I captain. After Suryakumar Yadav’s decline in form, head coach Gautam Gambhir wanted a change in leadership. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar favored Shreyas Iyer for the role.
“Gambhir wanted change, but Agarkar wanted Iyer,” the source said.
The report said that Gambhir had initially considered Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan as captaincy options. However, Agarkar reportedly argued that if IPL performance and leadership credentials were the key factors, then Iyer would have emerged as the strongest candidate.
How did Shreyas Iyer win the captaincy race?
Gautam Gambhir believes that recent performance should be given significant importance in selection decisions. The report claims that the India head coach feels that Suryakumar Yadav’s prolonged decline in form has weakened his case for continuing as T20I captain despite the team’s success under his leadership.
The report further states that Gambhir discussed the possibility of replacing Suryakumar during IPL 2026. Despite leading India to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year and maintaining an unbeaten bilateral series record as captain, Suryakumar lost both the captaincy and his place in the T20I team.
Suryakumar scored 242 runs in nine innings at an average of 30.25, which included only one half-century, during the T20 World Cup 2026. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer received the support of the selectors and was handed the leadership role despite not playing a T20I for India since the series against Australia in December 2023.
Shreyas Iyer strengthens his case with proven leadership record
The appointment of Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain reflects his impressive leadership record in franchise cricket. Ajit Agarkar was impressed by Iyer’s ability to successfully lead different teams and consistently deliver strong results in major tournaments.
Iyer has captained teams in 101 IPL matches and won 55 of them. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, led Delhi Capitals to their first final in 2020 and took Punjab Kings to the final in 2025.
Although Punjab Kings missed the playoffs in IPL 2026, Iyer enjoyed a stellar season with the bat. He scored 498 runs in 13 innings during the campaign at an average of 55.33 and a strike rate of 168.81, which included one century and five half-centuries.
Iyer made his T20I debut for India against New Zealand in November 2017. He has scored 1,104 runs in 47 T20I innings at an average of 30.66 and a strike rate of 136.12, including eight half-centuries, with the highest score being 74 not out against Sri Lanka.
