Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) kept their ipl 2026 Playoff hopes alive with rousing 29-run win Gujarat Titans (GT) Friday night at Eden Gardens. The win not only delayed their elimination from the tournament but also injected new energy into their campaign at a crucial stage of the season. It was a memorable evening for the franchise as the experienced all-rounder Sunil Narine Completed 200 IPL matches, while KKR also celebrated their 100th IPL match at their iconic home venue.
led by Ajinkya RahaneThe Knight Riders produced their best performance of the season against a Gujarat team who already looked like favorites for a top-two finish. More importantly, the win gave KKR 11 points from 12 matches and ensured that they remain mathematically alive in the race for the playoffs.
Playoff scenario for KKR
Despite the morale-boosting result, Kolkata’s path to the playoffs remains extremely challenging. The equation for Rahane’s team is simple – they have to win both their remaining matches in the league stage. KKR are scheduled to face Mumbai Indians on May 20 before taking on Delhi Capitals on May 24.
If they are successful in winning both the matches, KKR will finish with 15 points. However, even this cannot guarantee qualification as Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans have already crossed the 16-point mark. This means Kolkata are realistically fighting for the third or fourth playoff spot.
KKR’s batting and bowling units will also be under pressure to improve their net run rate (NRR), which still remains slightly negative around -0.040. In a tightly packed points table, NRR could ultimately become the deciding factor.
Even if Kolkata reaches 15 points, their qualification hopes will largely depend on other results going in their favour. Many rival teams are also fighting for the remaining playoff spots, making the final week of the league stage incredibly intense.
KKR would ideally like Sunrisers Hyderabad to lose both their remaining matches against Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Punjab Kings, who are currently ahead of Kolkata, need to lose at least one of their remaining fixtures against RCB or Lucknow Supergiants.
Rajasthan Royals also remain in contention and KKR are expected to lose at least two of their last three matches. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings will have to drop at least one of their remaining fixtures to prevent them from progressing in the standings.

Net run rate can become KKR’s biggest hurdle
While the win over Gujarat helped Kolkata marginally improve their NRR, they still lag behind many direct rivals. Teams like Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad currently have better NRR figures, giving them an advantage in case the teams finish level on points.
Now just winning will not be enough for KKR. They may need dominant wins in their last two matches to boost their NRR and strengthen their chances in potential tie-break situations. The team management will especially expect explosive performances from players like Rinku SinghAnd Narine, whose influence could prove decisive in improving the victory margin during the final stages.
