Former South African wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen could be released by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) mini-auction. According to Times of India, the franchise is considering letting go of the South African batsman to free up funds for the upcoming auction.

Klaasen was retained by Sunrisers ahead of the last IPL season for a whopping sum of ₹23 crore. The right-handed batsman scored 487 runs in 14 matches at an average of 44.27 and an impressive strike rate of 172.70, which included one century and one half-century. However, the team failed to reach the knockout stage.

SRH considering releasing Heinrich Klaasen ahead of IPL 2026 mini auction

According to a report in Times of India, SRH may take a strategic decision by releasing Heinrich Klaasen ahead of the auction. The move will free up ₹23 crore, giving the franchise more flexibility to address key weaknesses, especially in their bowling and middle order.

The report states that SRH could attempt to buy back Klaasen at a lower price, possibly around ₹15 crore, which would leave them with enough money to effectively strengthen other areas of their squad.

“There are strong murmurs, and if they do it could be a smart move by SRH. Going into the auction with more than Rs 23 crore gives them a fair shot at filling the key gaps – assembling a penetrating bowling attack and getting their middle-order right.”

“They may also get a chance to get about Rs 15 crore back to South Africa, and the remaining amount could help them make some impactful purchases,” says an industry source following the developments.

Heinrich Klaasen’s future with Sunrisers Hyderabad uncertain

Heinrich Klaasen recently announced his retirement from international cricket. Despite his form in the IPL, he might not be in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s plans. The 34-year-old scored 105 off 39 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders in SRH’s final match of the 2025 season.

However, his lack of consistency throughout the campaign has raised questions over his retention. Klaasen was one of SRH’s most expensive signings, earning more than captain Pat Cummins’s ₹18 crore deal.

With the team finishing sixth in IPL 2025 after finishing runners-up last year, the management is reportedly considering releasing him to strengthen its auction purse. SRH may still consider buying back Klaasen at a low price as part of their rebuilding strategy.
