Harshit Rana out of T20 World Cup 2026, Gautam Gambhir disappointed!

The defending champions, the India national cricket team, have suffered a major blow ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 as their fast bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the tournament on Friday, January 6.

Harshit Rana’s dream of T20 World Cup 2026 shattered

Harshit Rana, who was seen as a strong impact option with both ball and bat, will now miss the entire T20 World Cup 2026 due to a knee injury, as reported by Times of India journalist on X.

The young fast bowler suffered a knee injury during the T20 World Cup 2026 practice match against South Africa in Navi Mumbai on February 4. Rana struggled while bowling his first over and had to be stopped twice during the run-up. He was clearly in pain and was seen holding his knee.

After bowling just one over and conceding 16 runs, Rana limped off the field and did not return to the match and will now miss the big moment of his early career.

Rana has not been dropped yet: Suryakumar Yadav

However, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav has shared a different update on Rana. He stressed that Rana has not been dropped yet but admitted that the situation is not looking good.

“Harshit Rana has not been ruled out yet; the physios are assessing him, but he is not looking good,” Suryakumar told reporters in Mumbai.

Furthermore, Suryakumar pointed out that the team is always selected on the basis of combination, and if Harshit is unavailable, they have enough options, but they will miss the youngster, especially after his recent impressive contributions with both bat and ball.

The captain said, “You make the team by thinking about the combination; if he is unavailable, we have enough players to make a new combination. If we miss him, we will definitely miss him. We will look at fast bowlers who can also bat, but there is no hard and fast rule. There are options.”

Why is it becoming difficult to ignore Harshit Rana?

Harshit Rana is slowly becoming an important player for India as he makes an impact with both bat and ball, especially in white-ball cricket. The 24-year-old regularly bowls at speeds in excess of 140 km/h, and troubles the batsmen with his pace and intensity.

The young fast bowler likes to hit hard lengths and hit the ball down the pitch, which creates extra bounce and puts the batsman under pressure. Rana also adds valuable runs lower down the order, giving India additional batting depth when needed. His power-hitting ability makes him a dangerous option even when coming late to bat.

Because of this rare blend of pace, bounce and batting support, Rana is being seen as a potential X-factor for India. So far, he has played 2 Tests, 14 ODIs and 9 T20 matches for India, in which he has taken 4, 26 and 9 wickets respectively. He also has around 200 runs in his name in international cricket.

Notably, the defending champions will begin their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, February 7.
