Harry Kane offers to play cricket for England amid Ben Stokes controversy

England football captain Harry Kane has jokingly offered to play cricket for England following the nightclub controversy involving Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson. As the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) launched an investigation into the incident, Kane made light-hearted comments on social media.

The controversy occurred after England’s victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s. England successfully defended the target of 254 runs and bowled out New Zealand for 138 runs in the final innings to take a 1–0 lead in the series. The second Test is scheduled to start from June 17 at Kennington Oval, London.

Always ready when needed – Harry Kane jokes about England cricket call-up

Harry Kane humorously reacted to the state of English cricket by offering his services to England and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The England football captain posted pictures on social media showing off his batting and leg-spin bowling skills and joked that he was available if needed.

“Always ready when needed, @englandcricket and @RCBTweets”

Kane is currently preparing to lead England in the FIFA World Cup. He is set to become the second captain after Billy Wright to lead England in three World Cups. England begin their campaign against Croatia at the Dallas Stadium on June 18 before taking on Ghana on June 24 and Panama on June 28 in their remaining group-stage matches.

Ben Stokes’ future in danger after nightclub controversy

England’s preparations for the second Test against New Zealand have been disrupted by the controversy involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson. The pair were reportedly involved in an altercation at the Rex Rooms bar on the King’s Road in Chelsea after England’s victory at Lord’s.

Reports suggest that the incident began after a disagreement between Atkinson and an academy player from Saracens Rugby Club. The situation later escalated into a major scuffle and a security guard needed stitches. England have not yet announced their squad for the second Test starting on June 17.

Meanwhile, Stokes’ future has become a major talking point. If reports are to be believed, he is considering retiring from international cricket. There is also speculation that he may have to lose the Test captaincy. With the ECB investigation ongoing, the next few days could prove crucial for the England captain.

ECB had imposed curfew after off-field incidents

England’s recent off-field controversies prompted the ECB to impose a midnight curfew following the team’s disappointing 2025-26 Ashes campaign in Australia.

During the New Zealand tour, white-ball captain Harry Brook was fined and reprimanded after an altercation with a nightclub bouncer on the eve of a match. Jacob Bethel, who was also involved in this incident, escaped punishment beyond an official warning.

Concerns were further raised during the Ashes when several England players were seen drinking during breaks in the tour in Noosa, Queensland. ECB managing director Rob Key dismissed suggestions of a drinking problem within the team and Ben Stokes later said he would stop drinking.
