Team India is winless in its current UK tour. After losing two consecutive matches against Ireland, they lost to England in the second match of the 5-match bilateral series in Durham tonight after the match was abandoned. With tonight’s win, Harry Brook’s England take a 1-0 lead in the series.
The first match of the 5-match T20I series had to be abandoned due to rain in the second innings, but the second match was absolutely thrilling as it had many notable moments from the batsmen and bowlers of both the sides.
Ishan Kishan was the most successful batsman from India.
The match in Manchester immediately became special as 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi made his debut for Team India in T20Is during the match. Vaibhav registered his first international match for the senior national cricket team by hitting a six off England fast bowler Joffra Archer. He started his innings well, but had to score only 14 runs.
Ishan Kishan was the team’s top scorer with 49 runs. Abhishek Sharma continued his good form and added 43 runs, which confirmed Team India’s score at 190 runs. Later in the first innings, Tilak Verma’s explosive cameo from Blades boosted the run rate.
Sam Curran, with 3 wickets – the wickets of Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shivam Dubey – was the most successful bowler for the England national cricket team at the Old Trafford cricket ground.
India took 2 wickets in the opening over of the second innings.
Arshdeep Singh gave a solid start to India with the new ball in hand. On the very first ball of the second innings, the seamer dismissed both Phil Salt and Jos Buttler for zero. The salt went for a golden goose.
In the second over of his spell, Arshdeep conceded 27 runs while England captain Harry Brook hit the fast bowler for two fours and a hat-trick of sixes. Axar Patel soon completed his 100th T20 International wicket for India by taking the wicket of Brook.
At the drinks break of the second innings, the Three Lions needed exactly 100 runs in 10 overs to win the match. Jacob Bethel remained unbeaten to ensure his team’s victory. England won the match by 4 wickets and 6 balls remaining.
“Very happy”: Harry Brook after 4-wicket win over India
After the match, England captain Harry Brook said he was extremely pleased with the performance, claiming the victory. He praised fast bowler Sam Curran for his excellent bowling. He looked happy as the batsmen worked hard to score runs.
“Very pleased, yes. I thought the fielders were excellent. And that’s one of the things we talked about, getting off the ropes and trying to stop twos. And there were some good stats there. I think we had 11 twos and they had five. So we were very happy with that,” Harry Brook said at the presentation ceremony.
“We knew we could chase it with the wind and the dimensions of the field. The idea was to start really well in the power play. It didn’t quite work out in the first few overs. But we were happy with where we were after the power play. It’s great to have him there (Bethel). He bowled brilliantly in that short phase.”
