Hardik Pandya literally dragged Mumbai Indians to an unwanted low in the IPL at Wankhede

Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered a complete shock in their IPL 2025 clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday, April 29. They gave everything, but in the end, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) won after their stellar batting efforts in front of a packed stadium.

Ryan Rickelton played one of his best innings of the season. The left-handed batsman scored his maiden IPL century in just 44 balls and became the fastest century scorer for Mumbai Indians. Will Jacques also played an aggressive innings of 46 runs in 22 balls against SRH.

MI stunned by SRH in high-scoring IPL 2026 thriller

Rickelton, who played a memorable unbeaten inning of 123 runs with the help of 10 fours and 8 sixes in 55 balls, added 93 runs with Jacques to take Mumbai Indians to a huge score of 243 runs for 5 wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad. It looked like MI had almost won the game before SRH pulled off the blow.

Travis Head was in his usual aggressive mode and scored 76 runs off just 30 balls, while Abhishek Sharma also played a quickfire inning of 45 runs off 24 balls. Their mammoth opening partnership of 129 runs in just 9.1 overs had already set a huge stage for SRH.

Although Hyderabad lost some cheap wickets, Heinrich Klaasen played another explosive inning of 65 not out off 30 balls, allowing Salil Arora (30 off 10 balls) to complete the job. SRH achieved the mammoth target of 244 runs against MI in 18.4 overs with six wickets in hand.

Mumbai Indians’ playoff hopes dealt a major blow

The win has boosted SRH’s playoff chances as they move to third place in the IPL 2026 points table with 12 points from 9 matches. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, are now struggling at the bottom and will need to do something special in their remaining matches to stay in the playoff race.

This was SRH’s fifth consecutive win and MI’s sixth defeat in the ongoing season. This win was very special for Sunrisers Hyderabad at Wankhede Stadium, because they have been able to win only three times at this ground so far. SRH’s previous wins came in Mumbai in 2018 and 2022.

Mumbai Indians touch new low in IPL

On the other hand, it was a major embarrassment for the five-time IPL champions. MI have now lost four consecutive matches at the Wankhede Stadium for the first time in IPL history.

SRH’s defeat also brought another unwanted record for Hardik Pandya’s team. In their last match, Mumbai suffered their first defeat against Chennai Super Kings by a margin of 100+, and now they have lost the match at the Wankhede Stadium while defending 200+ runs.

This was MI’s only second defeat while defending 200 or more runs in the IPL, having previously suffered a defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad last year. Their record is excellent, winning 19 out of 21 games in the tournament so far, and defending 200+ goals.

Mumbai Indians’ biggest weapon, Jasprit Bumrah is going through a bad phase, and he gave away 54 runs in his quota of 4 overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With this spell, Bumrah recorded his third most expensive figures in IPL history.
