Former Team India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has defended Abhishek Sharma after Mohammad Amir termed the opener lazy ahead of the clash between the arch-rivals in the T20 World Cup 2026. Harbhajan warned that if Abhishek finds his rhythm, he has the potential to hurt Pakistan again on the big stage.

The match between India and Pakistan will be played on Sunday 15 February at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Abhishek missed India’s 93-run win over Namibia in Delhi due to a stomach infection. After recovering, the world’s top-ranked T20I batsman rejoined the team and traveled with the team to Sri Lanka.

Speaking to Vikrant Gupta on Sports Tak, Harbhajan Singh said that Abhishek is a complete batsman with a full range of shots and clear game awareness. Harbhajan said that Abhishek can score all around the ground and can adapt to different situations.

“I mean, come on – what should I say to him? He just gets up and says anything. If you call him a slugger, fine, let him hit sixes – but he is a proper batsman whose every shot is in the book,” Harbhajan said.

He said, “He is a complete batsman who knows where the ball is coming and plays accordingly. He plays over-cover shots, hits through point. He can go to long-on, long-off, midwicket – he has every shot. After that, you can’t just call him a slugger.”

Abhishek Sharma will be in your dreams again – Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh said that Abhishek Sharma has already shown his talent at the international level. He said that if Abhishek settles at the crease in Colombo, he has the strength and confidence to completely change the game and trouble Pakistan once again.

“If I start naming the real sloganeers, some people may get upset, but I don’t want to create more drama. Still, to call anyone such a slogan – I don’t think it is fair. Abhishek is a top-class batsman who has proved his worth in world cricket.”

“And just wait and see tomorrow. If Abhishek stays at the crease, he will remind everyone who he is. For the last 4-5 months, he is already in your dreams. If he grows up tomorrow, for the next six months, he will be in your dreams again. That’s all,” Harbhajan said.

India beats Namibia by 93 runs in absence of Abhishek Sharma

Abhishek Sharma had a difficult start in the T20 World Cup 2026. He was out for a golden duck against USA in Mumbai. The left-hander developed a stomach infection and had to be hospitalised, due to which he was ruled out of the next match.

The 25-year-old missed India’s match against Namibia in Delhi. India still performed brilliantly and won the match by 93 runs. Sanju Samson was included in the final eleven in place of Abhishek. He was out again after scoring 22 runs in eight balls with three sixes and a four.

Ishan Kishan scored 61 runs in 24 balls, while Hardik Pandya added 52 runs in 28 balls. India finished with 209/9 and then bowled out Namibia for 116 in 18.2 overs. Varun Chakraborty took 3 wickets for 7 runs, while Pandya and Akshar Patel took two wickets each.

Abhishek remains an important player for India in T-20. He has scored 1,297 runs in 39 matches at an average of 36.02 and a strike rate of 194.45, which includes two centuries and eight half-centuries.
