In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to make some reforms in the grassroots setup. As per the latest reports, the board has appointed some former Team India players like Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh.
If reports are to be believed, Harbhajan Singh can be appointed as coach along with Zaheer Khan.

Former India batsman VVS Laxman, head of cricket at BCCI’s Center of Excellence (formerly NCA) in Bengaluru, is reportedly trying to bring some former Team India cricketers to the camp to groom budding cricketers. According to PTI, the young cricketers will be thrilled and excited to have Zaheer Khan or Harbhajan Singh as their coach.
It is reported that BCCI’s Center of Excellence (COE) is organizing a five-day special red ball camp with the players of India Under-19 and India-A team. Zaheer Khan has been appointed to look after the young fast bowlers, while Harbhajan Singh may be appointed to train the spinners.
Harbhajan Singh may be in a position to train emerging spinners
According to reports, the CoE will also arrange for an off-spinner’s camp, where the Punjab-born player can be in charge. Dates for the anticipated 5-day camp have not been announced yet.
With Troy Cooley turning 60, the COE is without a fast bowling coach. On February 9 this year, BCCI started accepting applications to search for the next fast bowling coach. Media reports have claimed that Zaheer Khan will be the new fast bowling coach during the special camp.
“A batch of fast bowlers from state associations have been invited for a special fast bowling camp from February 28 to March 2 at the COE in Bengaluru under the tutelage of Zaheer. VVS Laxman, head of cricket at the COE, has taken keen interest in the initiative,” a BCCI source told The Times of India.
Will Zaheer Khan work as a full-time coach in CoE?
However, it will be interesting to see whether Zaheer would like to take up a full-time job at the CoE. He has coaching experience. The former PAC, who recently stint with Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League.
“Zaheer is very keen to take up coaching roles. He was associated with Lucknow Supergiants and believes he can help the next generation of cricketers. It is a good sign that a fast bowler like him has shown interest in BCCI programs. However, it needs to be seen if he wants to take up a full-time job at the CoE as it would require him to spend a lot of time away from his family,” the source told the media house.
Apart from Zaheer, no official statement has come from the board regarding Harbhajan Singh. The board is likely to announce the dates of the camps in the coming days and will also reveal the names of the trainers.
