Glenn Maxwell refuses to retire despite Ricky Ponting’s request

Veteran Australian all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell, 37, is reluctant to take any decision on his future and has ruled out any possibility of playing for Australia at the 2028 LA Olympics. He was part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 squad for Australia which was eliminated midway through the competition.

Glenn Maxwell’s availability for Australia in the next major T20I tournament is under scrutiny, as the veteran match-winner will turn 40 when Australia hosts the next T20 World Cup and will compete at the Olympics just months before the World Cup in 2028.

He has signed a two-year deal with Melbourne Stars in the BBL and will also be seen playing in the upcoming seasons of PSL and MLC. On the other hand, he will also play in the new Europe-based T20 league for the franchise he partly owns.

Glenn Maxwell ruled out any quick decision to end T20I career, saying “there is no need to make any kind of formal announcement.”

After Australia’s unsuccessful campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup, former Australian legend Ricky Ponting predicted that he will not be a part of the playing eleven for the Olympics and ICC T20 World Cup 2028. Australia has to play only 8 T20Is before August 2027.

“I think not making a decision about my future was probably based on what’s going to happen over the next 12 months,” Glenn Maxwell told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday. He announced that he would not take any sudden decisions on his future.

“There’s not a lot of T20 cricket planned right now, so there’s probably no need to make any kind of formal announcement, and just see how my body is going and how I’m travelling, and if there are opportunities to play in the future, hopefully I’m fit and active,” he said.

Glenn Maxwell eyes Olympics and 2028 T20 World Cup for Australia

The Australian all-rounder was asked about his desire to play in the Olympics and the T20 World Cup for Australia; He then claimed that if his body and his form remain intact then he will definitely play.

“Fit and firing? Hopefully,” Maxwell said. “But yes, not setting any dates.

“I felt like I got better and better throughout the World Cup. I probably judge it by how I’m running around the field and how I’m feeling, probably more than any statistics related to wickets and runs,” he said.

He then added, “And I felt like I was able to get through games very easily. It felt like I was playing my role as well as I could, and it felt like I still had a lot to give.”

Glenn Maxwell’s poor T20I form and next T20I task for Australia

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell scored 9, 31 and 22 in the T20 World Cup with an uncharacteristic score of 110.71. During this time he also scored the slowest 30+ score of his career. In the last 12 innings he played in T20 International and BBL, he averaged just 15.55 with a strike rate of 113.82.

Australia’s upcoming T20I clash will be against Bangladesh in a three-match series in June. He has already announced his retirement from ODIs and Maxwell said that ahead of the 2027 World Cup, the Australian selectors will push for a 50-over format.

“We’ve had some discussions about what the next part will look like, and we’re going to continue to have a really open and fluid discussion going forward,” he said. “Like I said, if I’m fit and active and available, I’ll be ready,” Maxwell said. He claimed that he has held talks with the national selectors.
