India’s dream of reaching the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 now hangs in the balance and the situation looks even more difficult than at the beginning of the cycle. And now Aakash Chopra has openly claimed that the Indian cricket team has pushed itself into a corner and now needs near-perfect results to stay in the race for the WTC final.
WTC 2027 dream in danger as India faces a brutal road ahead
The Shubman Gill-led Indian Test team is currently placed sixth in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 points table with 48.15 per cent of points. Half of their journey in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle is already over, as they have finished three of their six Test series.

India lost all WTC points in the home series against South Africa, causing a huge loss. India also failed to get enough points on the England tour, before being whitewashed by the Proteas at home, ending the five-match Test series 2-2 with less than half the points.
They only picked up full points against West Indies, but that alone is not enough to offset the damage done to their WTC position. Therefore, they now have no margin for mistakes in their remaining Test matches against Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia.
Aakash Chopra describes India’s path to the WTC final as very difficult.
“I will be very honest. It has been difficult because you lost both the matches at home. That means you have lost 100 per cent points. You came away from England with less than 50 per cent points. You got 100 per cent points against West Indies,” Aakash Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.
Chopra has pointed out that India can score 100 per cent on the Sri Lanka tour, but in modern Test cricket, a clean sweep in a five-match Test series rarely happens, which they need against Australia on home soil. And then, India has not won a Test series in New Zealand since 2009.
Given this situation, the former cricketer felt that India’s chances of making the WTC final were very slim. The cricket pundit further explained, “You have to perform well against Sri Lanka, then New Zealand and then Australia at home. You don’t win five matches in a five-match series. Normally it doesn’t happen. So it is very difficult to win 100 per cent points there.”

WTC final is tough for India: Aakash Chopra
Chopra said that the 2-0 defeat in the Test series against South Africa has changed the entire equation for India. He believed that even a win against the Proteas could have kept India in a safe position, but the opportunity was missed. “The WTC final is tough for India. It is not going to be easy. I can share it with you 100 per cent and it is not good news. India should have won at least one match and got 50 per cent points against South Africa,” he said.
India are now facing a cruel reality, as a bad series could end their WTC final dreams completely. “Taking a zero from there and then expecting that we will get 100 per cent against Australia on home soil and we will win in New Zealand as well, it will not happen so easily. We cannot beat New Zealand in New Zealand. That is true. So, it is going to be tough,” Chopra said.
